Had one come into work for an alignment yesterday, a '12 with 70,000. Took it for a drive afterwards to check my alignment and it had a bad shudder/chug through 1st gear and then slipped going into second. That's one on the way out.

They're dreadful. My wife's 14' Focus would shudder/shift hard from 1st - 2nd and occasionally from 2nd to 3rd. It was a great little car besides that. The dealer reflashed twice but they couldn't get it to produce a warning code so they wouldn't fix it. Even if we could have gotten it fixed, it would have taken at least 6 months to get the parts according to the service manager I was working with. So I said screw it and sold it.

This exact issue is keeping me on the fence about getting a Transit Connect. They're such cool little vans...but I'm dreading that trans...

The funny thing is: Squeezing out mpgs to make the epa happy is a priority and so the DCT is there to let the engine work more efficiently than it would with a traditional torque converter auto. But, the car seems to like it more when I stick the transmission in sport mode and thrash it... inefficiently

The Focus wants me to stick it to the man.

I thought the TC uses a conventional six speed auto? If not, I'll have to scratch it off my list of possible future vehicles.

Not sure if the TC uses a regular slushbox or not, but being that the Fusion does, it probably does as well.

For the whole efficiency argument, I much prefer the torque converter that spends 95% of its life with the lockup clutch engaged approach.

This is interesting. Ford's website lists both the "PowerShift" DCT and the regular 6 speed auto (same transmission that's in the Fusion, Transit Connect, and everything else) as optional equipment for the 2017 Focus.

Interesting!

Farther down under specifications it seems that the regular automatic (SelectShift®) is only available with the 1.0 EcoBoost engine.

And if I read the spec sheet right you can't get a hatch with a manual unless it's an ST or RS.

The regular 6-speed slushbox in the Transit Connect also has similar issues with output shafts leaking, the trans running out of oil, and then frying itself because you have no way to check the fluid level until its too late. NO THANKS.

1st gen Transit Connect had a conventional automatic (I had a 2010). Transmission was fine, the traction control was lousy. I got tired of having problems every time we got a little snow or ice(even with Blizzaks) and traded it in for an Outback. Best part of that is that the Outback, except for height, has more cargo space.

My '13 Focus has the shuddering issue. The TSB from Ford is to replace the clutch pack and the input shaft seal, however I have seen people on the Focus forums say that it fixes the issue for a short period of time.

I have noticed that if I drive it in regular traffic, it will start to shudder and will get worse, but if I thrash on it for a few minutes, the shuddering stops.

What's concerning me, is that I can hear what sounds like grinding noises when it shifts some times.

The grinding noises are normal. It's the shift motors. Nothing there to worry about.

Ford has a web site that explains the transmissions differences.

Grinding noises can be called 'normal' but the sound still means something will fail sooner than later.

Engine shuts off when you stop, restarts when you take your foot off the brake.

You'd think it's a recipe for unsmooth driving, but I've yet to have one not be running by the time I could get my foot on the accelerator. It's that seamless.

It'l scare the dickens out of you though when you are low on fuel at a stoplight and your car just shuts off

I think select shift is the same transmission as the power shift just without a sport mode

Actually I had that backwards. Selectshift has the + and - buttons for auto shifting. Power shift just has a D and L position on the shifter.

130,000 miles 2014 focus with dct.   just got 3rd tcm.   and now dealer tells me needs clutch slave cylider  $1500 job.  could this be related to transmission issues?  is this price for job realistic?  or are they just bsing the lady that took car in?  thanks

As I change the oil on my '13 Fiesta I noticed an oil leak by the transmission.   As a coincidence I noticed that I was getting occasional shudder.   It had been ok for 55k miles.

Took it to Ford, they did a slip test and replaced the main shaft seal and clutch also the rear main seal.   Full warranty.   It drove smoothly after.
