Nice! Mr. Throck - I do believe you're now the third (fourth?) GRM member to own that Vette. I miss it, at times - hope it's been good to you!

Hard to believe that is on a stock bottom end.

Those small LSX motors are way under apreciated. Along that line of thinking it is why I think the 5.3 is the best $$$$$ / HP in the LSX lineup.

I just saw this.

I believe he bought it from you. You must have bought it from Zoo? Maybe it'll be mine one day. I know my son would sure like to have it.

At least three -- the gentleman I purchased it from doesn't post here, but likely is a long-term GRM reader.

I miss the car, too. I'd love a chance to drive it again.

I never once asked myself why someone would want a stock-appearing GMC truck with over 900hp. Never even crossed my mind. I have been on this board too long.

I did ask myself why someone would want one that never lived long enough to make a single pass down the dragstrip.

In reply to tuna55:

Shocker, 900 on stock rods ends in disaster. However, I think that you can easily run 600 hp on one of these with just upgraded bolts and those LS9 headgaskets. Grant this is just a guess but I imagine 7 minutes on the google would support this.

500-600hp appears to be the sweet spot with very little work.

I think his build does answer the "how long will it last @ 1000+ crank hp?" question

He has been boosting and beating on this thing for about 3yrs.

Yeah there is a guy on another board I'm on that has a Ford Fairlane that has had various LSx based truck engines in it. He's basically been doing bare bones shadetree budget builds to troll everybody.

I think he was around 600hp on the 4.8 when it let go, but it was making that power for a LONG time.

Here's his youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/denmah

I think Hot Rod had an article where they kept boosting a 5.3 to see what kind of power they could get, and after the test they realized it was a 4.8. The power was breathtaking . . .

I like that he kept going till he found the limit. That's how it works. He whipped on it and pushed it for 3 years.

It amazingly made it to a few rounds of abuse at 900HP on a stock bottom end. That's phenomenal.

I agree getting one of these up to 600-700 HP range would be a riot, and likely would hold up for a decent amount of time without big money mods, and replacement 4.8's are cheap anyways.

tuna,

did you miss the part that this was a 110k mile stock engine that he had been boosting hard for over 40k miles?

i do love my 5.3. i want to boost it eventually but i've heard the 5.3 laughs at 200+hp shots of nitrous so i'm starting at 100hp jets and going from there. i'm not boost/gas it till it blows guy because i do not want to put another engine in for at least 100k, but i'm going to have fun.

i'm seriously considering ditching my TT gen1 small block parts for my belair and just finding a cheap low mile 4.8 or 5.3 and throwing a big single on it.

Yeah at 600hp or so it'd probably be a lot cheaper to just swap the engine every couple of years instead of building it to be reliable, lol.

No, didn't miss it, but I don't think a few dynos before it blows constitutes a success. Sure, 900 is a ton of hp on a stock bottom end - that's why it didn't work. Sure, 600 is great, no doubt, but that's not what this thread is about.
