So I'm the advisor for Hope College's FSAE team, and last week we took their new car to do some dyno tuning.  My favorite shop in West Michigan is JR Marchand's shop at Gingerman racetrack, and we usually use his Dynojet 224.  It's always a great field trip for the team because he's always got some Miatas, some formula racers, some Radicals, and other cool stuff around the shop.  I thought you guys might enjoy the field trip as well, so here are some pictures.

This is some of the team with the car on the dyno.  Since 2018, they've run a Megasquirt and use a wireless connection to the laptop.  When they're testing on a track, they can watch the engine and other data acquisition as the car is running.  At the dyno, it's just nice that they can tune without cables.

Some of JR's customer and personal work:

JR swapped a rotary into the blue Miata.  He said it makes 190WHP and 180WTq.

Gingerman recently added a Honda Acty to its fleet (actually, so did I, so JR and I compared notes about where to get parts).

The team had a great day--their previous cars usually made about 65 WHP but this one made nearly 80 with a new intake and exhaust design.  They also tuned the dip out of the low-end.  FSAE cars usually have pretty strange "curves" as they run a 20mm restrictor.  That's why the HP line goes flat at 9000 RPM.  Ignore the red  AF line as the sensor was acting up in the first few runs.

The first thing I look for on a resume is FSAE. Those go right to the top of the stack.

My son spent 3-1/2 years there.

I miss going to Holland.  Candy store, farmers market, ice cream place, beaches.
