Up here you can buy complete JDM EJ25D (DOHC) engines for $600-$700 from the JDM places in Toronto.
I just sold one, running but with bad headgasket(s) and bottom end noise (but a bunch of new parts) for $100.
I was happy to get rid of it.
Sounds like it's better to piece it out.
That's a good idea; they seem to be more desirable as parts to build hybrid motors than they are as a complete unit.
Surprisingly, this one came to me without head gasket/head issues. IIRC, car was rear ended. Having the short block sit around has done more damage than anything.
