Funny thing is, I often feel the same way about sports car guys here vs guys doing aesthetic builds (i.e custom cars). Look at the stance threads. The guys here can often be just as closed minded and insulting as anyone on the HAMB if someone builds a car in a style they don't like.

I don't disagree that this forum can be somewhat close minded about aesthetic builds but in general there is a wider amount of acceptance than other forums. I mean plenty of people in the stance threads have said we like the look for the most part.

a while back I asked a question on the HAMB about LED lights which drew the rath of the moderator and was pulled within 4 hours for be "Non Traditional and Non Relevent. It was my opinion that LED's offered a safety factor due to their brightness and also were much more efficent then a 6 volt bulb.

To me building a hot rod or any high performance car is all about incorporating your own ideas, skills and doing what makes you happy. Often times it seems that many folks on the HAMB are asking if something is cool, acceptable to the Hot Rod Police (There are several there who seem to be experts on "tradition" or "the way it used to be" although they may not be even old enoughto know.) Almost like asking permission so they will be accepted.

With that being said the HAMB is a traditional hot rod site and will make no excuses about who or what they are. Some of the attitudes are a pain but I do enjoy the site. If you visit there much you will really see some outstanding craftmanship in all phases of car building. Some of the sheet metal, fabrication and welding could be considered art work.

Watching this thread with interest. Here is another site that I sometimes check out that you might find useful:

killbillet is so the GRM hot rod place to be. Cheap, and very resourceful.

The HAMB is for nuts like me who build honest traditional hot rods and are willing to spend hours tracking down just the right bits. They have many sticky's across the site to keep people from posting OT stuff.

Without the restriction on that site the signal to noise just goes a little nuts, but when I need to know the right oil to use in friction shocks from a 1928 model A that's the place to be.

I will echo what has already been said. Strictly tradional the HAMB is the place. But I like killbillet for GRM style hoot rod builds.

So, my idea of a rectangular tube frame, supercharged OHC straight six, 1st generation CRX (from the firewall back) body , all on big and little meats wouldn't fly on the H.A.M.B then ?

They have already pre-banned you for just thinking it.

I actually really like the new format and that the moderators are clamping down in the traditional sections. No more S10 builds with 350/350 sneaking in.

I think that I want to build something as bare bones as possible, no computer, no fancy paint. Just a car, a motor, a wheel, and a seat... What do I want to build? That's the big question isn't it.

It sounds like you want to build something that's 1930s inspired, with a minimalist interior and a track rat rustoleum paint exterior....you are open to using newer components instead of slavishly replicating the way things were done in 1950. You might be using a drivetrain from the 1980s or 1990s, but would like to exorcise it of the computer demons.

Welcome to the path, grasshopper. Pick up your hammer and water heater....

The HAMB classifieds are set up so you can't post in the for sale threads, you have to contact the seller by private message - click on the seller's name and then click on the private message button.

Yes, to all of the above. I'm def not against using a newer powerplant (not that I've made up my mind on anything yet). I'd also like the rustoleum or backyard paint job, as long as it isn't flat black. As for everything else I'm open. But coming from a guy who knows hot rods from what he has seen on tv or at a show, that's not saying much.

I also found the 62-66 Chevy truck builds which are super cool, because my dad had a 65 when I was a kid. I do know that I would rather build a car, but man some of those trucks are cool.

What I was hinting at is that this is the right place for you to be, and that's exactly the sort of build that several guys here are doing or have done.
