Full story

THOR is a 4 liter 4 cylinder motor pushing 1500hp. It was designed for time attack and hill climb classes, and can comfortably spin at 8k all day, possibly even up to 10.

Sorry, not a whole lot of text to summarize, just some impressive videos at the link.

Ok I was going to paste in some pertinent information but "your browser does not support pastng this way please use ctrl v" well I would use control v, but on an Android touchscreen tablet that's kind of impossible.

It makes me "thor" just thinking of the prices and time involved.

BTW, this is for a Porsche 968, so this is probably the ultimate version of the 944's 2.5L engine.

Four liter, four-cylinder? That thing probably looks like a tractor engine.

They mention that it's to save weight. I wonder how much weight they're actually saving? It does have the potential for some interesting packaging within a car I suppose.

Now they need to make an 8L V8 out of it.

Wow, I'm just rejoicing in the fact that there are some insanely rich people in the world who are willing to spend the $$"s to create some of this bat E36 M3 crazy stuff.

In normally aspirated mode it could still probably push 600 hp or more. I want one. Or two.

1 head, 2 cams, simplified timing system... crank is probably a wash

engine could be shorter too, which might help keep the weight behind the front axle

checking old specs on the hartley 4cyl and 8cyl might give an idea of the differences

Paging Eric, Alfadriver, are you out there?

From what you can see, what are your thoughts on this? Package? construction? Feasibility? and the reasons proposed?

While there are many of here with a lot of practical info on what works and doesn't work on existing engines, your opinion is the one i'm interested in for theoretical and new 'technology' as you live engine development every day.

I'm curious how they're cooling the head.  The block is sleeved so getting coolant to flow around each cylinder isn't too difficult - you can drill a coolant line straight through the block front to back right through the cylinders and machine a groove on the outside of the sleeves so it looks kind of like a spool so there's room for coolant to flow between the cylinder wall and the block, but how are they getting adequate cooling around the combustion chambers?  I know billet cylinder heads aren't a new thing but always heard they were just for drag racers who could get away without running any coolant because they were using alcohol for fuel so they ran cooler, and they didn't run long enough to really heat up.

A little googling revealed that Dart makes their water cooled billet heads in two pieces and then welds them together.  I've found other billet heads from Visner Engine Development that have "full water jackets" created with a 5-axis cnc mill, but I can't tell how they machine the water jackets.  There seems to be plates that the rocker arm studs screw into, maybe these plates also form the top half of the water jacket, so they carve out the water jacket with the 5-axis mill and then bolt the plates down to seal it?  Maybe my idea of a water jacket is too complicated and that current production water jackets are more for temperature constancy to better control combustion with regards to emissions control and that a simpler water jacket is more than adequate to cool the head for racing where emissions aren't a concern?

Wow, this turned into a long post, sorry.  I've always had a thing for 968s so I consider this whole project really interesting and am just really curious about it.

No, no. They made the 4L, 4cyl. So now they need a 2L, 8cyl.
