I'm back on the lookout for a potential hot hatch, and of course the GR Corolla has entered the chat. One thing I've noticed recently is that the regular models (ie, not the Morizo or similar) seem to drop their values much quicker when compared to, say, an FK8 Type R, and I'm not talking about ones with rebuilt titles.

Is that just wishful drinking on my part, or has someone else seen the same?

Dunno about used, but the dealer near me recently had a very pretty dark red new one for $4300 off sticker price.

A grand off MSRP seems to be not uncommon around here, but I hadn't seen that much off yet.

Is it because of the couple of instances of catching fire driving down the highway?

Kind of like like GR86/BRZ controversy with their engines and RTV? A few engines had an issue, but tens of thousands of others haven't.

Maybe, but I think the new car market is pretty soft right now due to economic uncertainty. $50k Corollas maybe more so.

I'm not dissing the car, its great that Toyota actually brought it to market. just maybe not the time to sell them.

With the current economy, I agree that it's not the best time to sell expensive tarted up econoboxes. That said, I think there's a bit more to it, given that the natural competitor (Type R) doesn't seem to suffer from the same kind of deprecation and also soft pricing for brand new cars.

I suspect the handful of well publicised fires and Toyota's alleged response hasn't necessarily helped, but it still doesn't quite feel like it's the whole story.

Of course, the US getting sloppy, Corolla-shaped seconds instead of the Yaris everyone else gets probably doesn't help much.

Yeah, the economy right now is definitely a concern and who knows what will happen now that we just added more uncertainty in a certain part of the world. I haven't seen the inside, but I wonder if it's like how I felt when I test drove a new 2018 STi back at the end of 2017. I thought "this interior in a $44k car? Really?"

And I wasn't super impressed with the laggy power delivery and super close gear ratios in it either. I'm sure it probably also felt less impressive since I just finished a test drive in a 2018 Camaro SS 1LE.

Combo of:
-Unimpressive interior for the price

-Base models have the most bland exterior of the lineup

-Economic uncertainty

-Diffs overheating on track + fires

-Desirable changes from MY to MY. 2025s gained an automatic that apparently shifts pretty well. Lots of rumors that the 2026's will get a torque bump and additional cooling

It's no different than any other "hot" car in demand.  Just wait a year or two for out-the door pricing to come back down to reality.  You pay a premium for the "I have to have one first"

You saved me the typing.  I love mine after a year, I am on a forum and FB group with plenty of others that do as well.  I think the hype has died down and now you're seeing realistic values.  (Insanely hot autocross yesterday and never got above 204F.)

If this means there are more cheap(ish) GR Corollas out there, that's a good thing, right?

I think the reality of them has turned out to be a lot less appealing than the original enthusiast hype. Its the competitor I'd probably pick last in that space if I were looking.

Agree. I just went to my local Nissan dealer on Friday to buy Datsun parts. They had 2 brand new Z cars on the sales floor with notes on the windshield that they were discounted $9500 off sticker price. I remember the huge markups when they first came out.
