I was all ready to brag on taking first in STF last weekend but finalized results have me in second by .28 seconds. As close as I've ever come to winning. I did have a guy in a stock 2 (all the way to the tires) in HS beat me by just over a second, so I've still got work to do.

Looking at my slip it appears it is an Axxess ASWC Controller. Head unit is a Pioneer AVH-P1400. Metra kit, antenna adaptor, & wiring harness adapter

Controller only shows for 2011 model yet there were no changes from 11 - 12.

Awesome, thanks for that. Doesn't hurt that it's one of the less expensive options either, or to know that it works with the Pioneer HUs. (Looks like yours is the previous version of the one I'm looking at BTW.)

saw a red, manual transmission 2011 Mazda2 at a dealers' auction today. no obvious faults. ~40k miles. It brought about $10k.

My girlfriend almost bought a Mazda2 just for that red. She fell in love with it. Then she ended up with a blue Mazda 3.... shrugs.

Anyone know if Andy Hollis has completed the Sport cruise control swap? Apparently he found out that the sport and touring have different air bags so it is more than the just the steering wheel.

Does the Mazda2 have traction control that can be turned off?

Yes. There is a button on the dash that enables you to slide to your heart's content. The only thing it doesn't disable is the brake/throttle kill where the throttle dies if you're pushing on both of them for over about two seconds, or exactly what you'd be doing if you are LFB. Luckily some enterprising person dug through the Mazda literature and there is a starting procedure that kills that too about 95% of the way. With the TC off, there is no sign at all of electronic nanny's on pavement, dirt or mud. It's quite nice.

So I know the Mazda2 is not being sold after the 2013 model year but when exactly will that end?

That's a fine question. With Mazda building the factory in Mexico it still seems a little weird that they're not planning on bringing any new 2's to the states. What I'm hoping for is a carry over year where they attempt to get rid of the stock they have and then re-introduce the 2 as an early 2015 with a 1.0 sky active motor or something. I'd be shocked if they didn't have enough stock on the lots and in the pipeline to hold them over until the end of the year. The realistic answer is that they'll sell what they have and never really announce the end of the 2. It will go out with a whimper.

took one (or is it 2) out for a test drive tonight. Couldn't really push it as it's -19 degrees C but the car felt light and fun. Shifter was sweet and makes me think maybe a car payment isn't that bad after all. Some good deals on 2012 models.

This is on my list for possible future purchase. Any kits for installing some factory Mazda rear disc brakes? No need to start the drum v disc argument, I am just wondering if the option is out there.

I have not seen nor heard of it being done yet. I did originally consider it since I loathe drum brakes but I honestly have no gripes on the drums on this car.

As far as I know, there aren't any disc conversions. I agree that the rear drums aren't really much of a problem on this car, even the road raced ones in B-Spec don't seem to be having any issues. There are a few running in more serious endurance racing series in Japan and elsewhere, I'd be interested in seeing if they've got a disc convo or the stock drums. I'm kind of thinking the latter since there's so little weight out back to deal with.

The 2 shares parts with the Fiesta, not with other mazda platforms. The Fiesta ST has rear disks and sourcing those parts from Ford would be the best bet once that car is actually out.

Fiesta has a different bolt pattern though, so the discs themselves would probably have to be custom-made for the application.

In case anyone is wondering, these are the ARP studs that fit the front of the 2.

Here one is next to a stock stud. The nut is on right about where it sits on the stock wheel.

If you're wondering even more, the front and the rear use different studs. Here is a front stud next to the rear with the drum off. Different shoulder. The knurled part is smaller in the rear. I would suspect that another common Miata fitament will work. I'll report back if I figure it out.

Today is the one year birthday of my Mazda2. It's been a good year. I picked up the car with 23 miles on the odometer and when I parked it this afternoon it had 16,379. I've burned 493.14 gallons of gas for a lifetime average of 33.2 mpg. Not exactly spectacular but that includes all driving. Highway, city, autocross, rallycross, everything. I do drive the car pretty hard because it's fun. I see 6K every day. My last 5 tanks which have only been normal driving ranged between 33.8 and 35.6 mpg.
Between the SCCA and BMWCCA I've driven in 15 autocrosses and two practice days. My pax position has gone from 85/115 to 17/106. My last two events have been second and first in STF. I've also run the car in five rallycrosses and gotten four first and one second place finishes. I replaced my stock tires with Z1 star specs at 1400 miles and those tires are just on the wear bars. They've been great. The star specs are mounted on a set of stock alloys that I picked up from a fellow forum member. The stock steel wheels are wearing a set of Firestone Winterforce snow tires for rallycross. Fantastic dirt tires. I also just started running a set of Z2 Direzzas on a set of 15x7.5 6ULs. If you're keeping count, that's three sets of wheels and four sets of tires in the first year. Somehow I'm still married.
It's been a fantastic car. I drive my four kids to school in it almost every day. Other than two oil changes (with a third one due) I haven't had to do anything to the car but wash it. I've added the wheel studs shown above and a set of camber bolts. I've also put on a harder rear motor mount which I would recommend to anyone who drives the car hard. Mazda not including the 2 in their lineup next year makes me sad. After a year of ownership I think it's wonderful and would recommend it to anyone.

So I was thinking about tire sizes again. We've established that 195/50 is the size of choice with sticky autocross rubber, but how about with more street-oriented tires? I wonder if 205/50s would provide an appreciable increase in grip with something like S.Drives or DZ101s or whatever. The almost exact diameter match to our stock size would be a nice side benefit.
