Question for Triumph people.

Or anybody else who might know for that matter. Found a nice TR6 steering wheel at the local bone yard which I want to go back and get. So I don't have to carry multiple sockets with me, does anybody know what size the steering wheel nut is? Also it looks like it's recessed down in there pretty good so is there anything else I need to know? It is after all British. Thanks in advance.

Just out of curiosity if anyone has any experience.....are most steering wheels nuts the same size on different vehicles?

IIRC, the nut on a Spitfire is 1 1/16", so I'd guess a TR6 would be at least that big. I use a deep socket and a extra-length 1/2" dr flex ratchet, but I've used a breaker-bar as well. Hopefully, it's not too badly frozen to the splines.

I believe Ian F is right on the size of the nut. Here's a quick way to remove the wheel, once the nut is loose: put the nut on so the top of it is even with the tip of the steering shaft. Grab the wheel and pull it toward you, at the same time smack the tip of the steering shaft and it should pop loose. It shouldn't take a real hard hit unless it's rusted in place.

Steering wheel nuts are all over the place on sizes, unfortunately.

Depends on the year of the Spitfire, so I've read. I've looked into wheels for my '79, and wheels from earlier ones will not fit at all. I believe they're smaller. And then there's the adapter search....

You're right, the corrosion on the splines may be the hardest part of pulling the wheel. A rented steering wheel puller may be your best friend.

True... we had a hell of a time finding an adapter to fit a Nardi wheel to our '79. If we had an earlier car it would have been easy. Ended up using one from a later Mini, I think, plus a bit of trimming and it's still not perfect. All of the adapaters sold today are the collapsing/safety-type and the Spit needs one that's not as deep in order to fit/look correct. I wanted to cut the collapsing part off and re-drill it, but was out-voted.

The TR6 steering wheel nut is 1 1/16". I'm not certain a deep socket is required if you have an extension. Be ready with some PB Blaster or equivalent.
