That said, I'd be looking at the 200TW tires for street use.

  • So after monkeying around and changing some sizes that will fit the MR2, it seems my options are R888r, Kumho V720, or ToyoR1R.  Any recommendations?

Depends how the car is used...I sure wouldn't run the r888r if the car sees much street use, but it would be the best on track. Out of those three the V720 would be best for street use.

Thank you. I will order the 720. Never had those before. How much mileage may I expect to see out of them? They won’t heat cycle out will they, like some other tires?

My yoko a048 I am seeing about 7500 miles on the set

car sees 5 autox a year

and lots of California twisty hard driving during week.

I did slow down, like doing 40 on a freeway where the speed limit is 75.  That's very unsafe as I become a rolling chicane for everyone, including semis.  Same thing to pull over.  I have no desire to get run over, particularly when it's hard to see because of the rain.

No thanks.  Better off sticking with real street tires that can handle rain, esp since the auto-x cheater tires aren't any slower on track than a set of RA1/NT01/R888's.

The V720s are the least vulnerable to heat cycling of the ones you listed...more vulnerable than most street-legal tires but much less than any R-comps.

Mileage...depends. You'll get way more than on your A048s for sure, I would guess about 2~3x as much.

We're still sitting around freezing in the morning here, and I hear tell the RE-71 (and probably other sticky tires) shouldn't be used near freezing temperatures.

While the RE-71's made the car accelerate SO much better, there's still good weather for driving, but it's too cold and I don't want the tires to crack.  Sigh.

I drove those same R888s to the track one morning. It was 25° F when I left and the temp for the first session was 32°F.

Sure they were slick for 3 laps instead of 1, but they didn't crack and I didn't crash or die.
