I know the SportRack (the brand) had little rubber foot covers so you weren't metal on metal. It also could take Thule cores if you were so inclined.

I just dipped the feet and clips for the cheapo rack I picked up in flex seal. The cushion depth seams more than adequate with 2 coats.
These racks are not very stable front to back though due to the curvature of the rain gutter. I may cut out the middle section of each foot to create 2 contact points rather than 1.
