Update - It's a 400! Engine, trans, and brakes all redone, 6X heads, TH400 trans, "factory correct", and no rust.

That sounds like a pretty good deal to me, especially if it doesn't have T tops. Pictures are necessary.

Roger, wilco.

Calling guy today at lunch. Talking to SWMBO tonight. I'd be surprised if she wouldn't be in favor of it. (Note that if one of you chuckleheads showed up at my house with $1500 clams, she'd sell you the damn car herself!)

I gotta say, I dig the Javelin more, but this is pretty cool and would look awesome sideways around the cones :)

Ditto... as long as it's a Pontiac 400 and not a Chebby 400...

I'm not a big fan of yellow cars, but that sounds like a good deal. Plus, in a pinch the T/A should be easier to unload for a good price should that be necessary.

You need to make that trade NOW before dude changes his mind! I'd make it straight up even if he wasn't offering the 1500.

also regarding chevy 400 vs poncho 400...visually you can determine that in like 1 second, but since Jav already said it has the 6x heads it's definitely all Pontiac.

Jav you could flip that thing and make money very easily, but it looks like a keeper to me.

PS - Pretty sure you're going to have to change username and avatar. Is it silverfleet's avatar that has the mullet-sporting "astro-dude" in it? Not that its cool to be the second one to do something, but something along those lines.

Update: It's a W72 car, so it's the hi-po 400. He doesn't think it's a WS6, but it has front and rear swaybars. He reneged on the $1500 on top after getting all the details of my car, which is fine. I think even a straight-swap would be good.

In reply to Javelin:

WS6 didn't start until 1978, so don't worry about that. Personally, I think you are doing good at a straight swap, but obviously I am biased. A rust-free 77 TA with the W72 is a really desirable car, and that is a rare color.

I am upgrading my 78 Esprit to WS6++ specs, it is mostly stuff a car guy would replace/upgrade anyhow. I can put together a list of what is involved. My 81 TA is a real WS6, and the 78 should spank it in every conceivable way.

Ok, there's a lot in this thread that's already been said, but I'll throw in my two cents.

The hood bird looks like the correct 1978-80 style Bird, so that's a good sign. If the shaker decal is original and the motor is original, that is a regular 400 or 403, NOT a W72 400. The easy way to tell the 403 from the rest is that it has the oil fill "tower" on the front passenger side of the motor, like this:

If it has the 400, whether it's the W72 motor or not, you are in better shape. The W72's are pretty much a standard 400 with the Pontiac 350's 6X heads with 2.11/1.66 valves and a slightly hotter cam. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same as the lower output version. I built my 400 out of a mess of parts, starting with a 75-79 .060-over block, a rotating assembly from a 1968 350 H.O (nodular crank), and 1971 400 GTO #96 heads (with the 2.11/1.77 valves). Pontiac engines are like Legos, well, mostly.

W72 cars should have chrome valve covers, too. They are identical in shape to the painted stock ones. They look like this:

Check out this site for more W72 info: Holy crap, an Angelfire site!!!!

On the rest of the pics, I can see a few things wrong.

-The wheel flares behind the front wheel are not stock. They are aftermarket pieces from back when that car was new.

-The front spoiler is missing. You will need that, as these cars get a lot of air from the bottom of the car. They make reproductions, but they are fiberglass. Try and source a urethane replacement, as you will most likely bounce it off a curb or two. They are getting harder to find.

-The rear 3-piece spoiler looks to be a later 79-81 set. They are taller than the earlier ones. It doesn't really matter unless you are doing a concours-quality resto. I prefer the big one.

-I'm pretty sure that car should have a TH350, not a TH400. Find out if it was swapped. If it's a TH350, the TH2004R 4-speed auto is nearly a bolt-in affair.

-That car appears to have the Standard interior, but it has Deluxe door panels and power options. Who knows what's stock. You can get a PHS Documentation package http://www.phs-online.com/ to verify what all the original specs of the car are.

-Yellow Trans Ams are rare. I dig them.

-Those wheels are Rally II's. It's extremely rare to see a W72 car wearing those, but it did happen. They make aftermarket Snowflake wheels now in many different sizes and widths. Year One makes them, and prices are reasonable.

If you need any more info, feel free to shoot me a PM.
