Not sure if that's the right term but there's some orange rust discoloration in various spots on my El Camino. What's the most effective way of cleaning these up a bit? At some point a repaint is probably in order but not yet, and I'd just like to tidy it up a bit for now.
A quick fix would be to remove the rust however you can and then paint with some anti-rust paint like Rustoleum. For the hinge that would probably be chemical rust removal followed by paint, but the hinge doesn't look that bad. For the window seam that would be sanding and painting, that one looks like it might be worse underneath.
Soft white buffing compound will clean up a lot of that. Wont stop rust by any means, just clean up the surrounding stain.

I'll give that a try. I'm not expecting it to stop the rust, just tidy it up for now. Not ready to repaint just yet
First rule of rust: It's always worse than it at first appears to be.
Also, rust never sleeps.
For the hinge, I'd take it apart if doing so is easy. Clean it up and get some lube on it, maybe a silicone grease that will stay put and exclude water.
Otherwise maybe shoot some WD-40 in it every so often to slow it down.
Rubbing compound is only marginally effective, any other suggestions?

Sonax Fallout Cleaner (nice Translation ) does that very nicely.
Cleaned this stuff on my CLK up very easily.

Soak a rag or paper towel in Evaporust, wrap it around the rusty parts, and cover with some kitchen cling wrap to keep it from drying out before it has a chance to work.
Thanks, I'll give those a try
