Seeking recommendations on replacement front brake rotors and pads for my 2016 Mazda6 Touring with 56K miles. Front rotors feeling a little warped, maybe 3/4 used up.

3,200 pounds empty, rarely fully loaded. Six-speed stick shift, 184hp but much torquier to drive. Low-volume daily driver in flat suburbia and commuting - 6K miles annually. No track or autocross, usually 10 over on highway, minimal heavy braking, and little zooming around. Very little mountain driving. OEM brakes fine once I got better tires. Don't want anything that has to heat up.

RockAuto shows a few options:
Power Stop Evolution Coated  $133    https://tinyurl.com/mrynhhnz

Power Stop Z23 Evolution Sport  $229  ($210 & returnable from Amazon)   https://tinyurl.com/f3v7dp5h

Any issues with slotted/drilled rotors for this application?

Other Brand / Model recommendations?

Thanks!

Slotted and drilled rotors should not be used for ANY application (including track cars). Unless they are like the carbon brakes of WEC cars.  Those holes (especially) just create stress risers and will cause cracking.

I like the cheap centric rotors.  I prefer oem pads if possible.

I also go with Centric rotors and pair them with AKEBONO ceramic pads whenever possible.  They were the OEM pad on my SAAB 9-5, stop great, last a long time and are low dust.  The only issue is I have no idea who to pronounce the name.

Thanks for the info!

I always thought Akebono was pronounced like the sumo wrestler: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akebono_Tar%C5%8D  (A pretty cool American sumo wrestler: "Akebono was one of the tallest sumo wrestlers ever, at 203 cm (6 ft 8 in) tall, and also one of the heaviest with a peak weight of 233 kg (514 lb) in March 1999.")

centric rotors with painted hats, akebono ceramic pads.  i've also been happy with centric ceramic pads on Honda Odyssey.

I've had the best luck with the "daily driver" grade Raybestos stuff on RockAuto with the painted/coated hats. Similarly, the Raybestos Element3 pads do really well on daily driver duty.

Every Centric rotor I've bolted on something has warped in short order, and I'm not even hard on brakes. I can't recommend those to anyone.

Agreed on the Raybestos stuff.  I put the element 3 pads and rotors in all of the rest of the family's normal daily drivers and they seem to last really well, stop well, and not give any uneven transfer layer deposits like what they got from the pads their local shop used.

Another vote for the Raybestos stuff. I put the element 3 pads and rotors on our 4runner this summer based on recommendations here. Nice performance and price.

In reply to Tony Sestito :

Ever since I started beading in new pads and rotors I have not had a warped rotor on any of our vehicles, its been probably 25 years or so now.

I tried Akebono ProAct pads on my daily and they stopped fine but had a noticeable squeal coming to a stop all the time, went with OEM after that.

RockAuto shows Brembo pads in the same category as Akebono for 2016 Mazda6, don't know how good cheap Brembos are but I'm curious.

I'm very pleased with Power Stop Z17 "daily driver" pads from Rockauto on wife's car. No noise, good bite, low dust. Very similar application as yours - a 50k mile Subaru Legacy that gets driven maybe 5k a year. I didn't bother with rotors yet at such low mileage, but since yours might be warped, I agree with avoiding drilled/slotted stuff on a daily driver. I've used Centric rotors on other cars with success.

That's the thing: I always bed pads properly. I've had some warp so bad that I thought I bent a wheel! I've used various Centrics on a number of cars and the result is the same every time. I had one on my old Mazda 3 warp so bad that you could actually see it. It looked almost like the vent vein was separating from the rotor face. It was wild!

I've had good luck with the Centric rotors with the coating and Centric ceramic pads from Rockauto.  Often available as a complete kit per axle.  Comes complete with hardware for one cheap and easy price.  Just installed a set on the front of a Honda Accord like 2 weeks ago.

+1 for cheap Centric rotors, I'll also second avoiding rotors with holes like the plague these days, and rotors with slots might only make sense for track use.

My Toyobaru came with some kind of Akebono street pads that worked great for street and autocross use.

the only warped rotor i've ever seen in my personal life was on an 88 civic and it was caused by tire store berkeleying up the wheel lug installation.

I have never actually seen a warped rotor.

I used to work at Napa and do rotor cutting.  They were always straight. Just had pad deposits, rust, or hard spots.
