You absolutely must buy it and add turbo rotary power. Kinda like this:

I know where there is an 8 second Starlet powered by a rotary. Huge rear slicks. It traps 170 with that tiny wheelbase. Scary.

I have an axle for that in my shed. $25 and you pick it up.

Man, I haven't seen a Starlet in the Philly area since the ninties!

Holy E36 M3!

In reply to Dr. Hess:

I might be taking you up on that. What is this particular axle you speak of? WHEN the starlet axle dies I will probably upgrade to something that isn't made of glass.

Also, the wife has gave her blessing, grudgingly. I have to sell another project, but that is ok. Anyone want a Triumph ST 955i?

I am thinking most likely the lightest weight OHC v6 I can find. I am thinking KL mated to a w58 (I have one already).

Yes. Same price as the Starlet right?

Ha, no. It is closer to adding a zero. It is a basket case but it is worth more than $250

The axle I have is from a Starlet. I forget exactly which one off hand. KP51 sounds familiar. I have the chassis plate at home. I pulled it at a junk yard and mistakenly thought it was the same as a Rolla axle. The gearing on those is really, really high. Like 2.8 or something.

Yeah, and they only have like a 5.6" ring gear that has major problems with 100 hp. I am planning more than 100 hp so probably not worth the trip. Thanks though. Anyone know of a decent rear axle that is narrow enough to fit under a starlet? ( I think that WMS to WMS is something like 50")

I've seen Corolla axles do the job... the 6.7 version with a soild pinion spacer will hold up to most power apps you'd use in a Starlet. The Legend cars use the center sections, so you might contact a legends axle company and have something made.........

My build uses a Legends center section, with gears made by Richmond Racing.

Interesting. Sounds expensive though. For that I think that a ford 7.5 would be cheaper to just have shortened.

Pretty excited, causing me to abandon a Swift GTi project so that it might make this older, cooler car live...

all true... but check mass. the Starlet axle is tiny, and proportional to the little starlet, a Ford 7.5 is a weeeeeeee bit heavier, and might make the car a handfull with so much rear unsprung mass

I'm going to stop wasting space trying to show pics until I can actually do it properly, apologies one and all. Slammer. The '80's toyota space van rearend may be worth a look. I'd guess its too wide, but the pumpkin is offset, so maybe narrow only one side??? It takes toyota truck lockers, and I bought, narrowed, and got a Tru Trac installed for less than a grand for another project. AE86 rearends work, but I understand them to be a bit wide, but workable. 1st gen RX-7 rearends look good to me, but I haven't measured. Get a GSL-SE, and swap the whole drivetrain(bolt pattern matches, and factory LSD)?

Always loved these little Starlets. They're based on the same floorpan as the old TE21/TE27 rear drive Corollas from the 70's. More room in the engine compartment than you might think.....I think a junkyard all-aluminum 4.8L baby LS would be about perfect.

I'm sure it would fit, I have seen a 1uz in there. I would rather go light weight with a 4 or a 6. My friend wants me to bike engine it. I have a couple 1 liter sport Bike motors.
