Rock Auto sells the brushes, bushings and starter drive, they just aren't combined in a kit so you have to buy them separately. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1194285,pgname,Electrical

Ok cool I wasn't sure exactly what was in a starter rebuild kit.

how about your local electric motor rebuilder? quality parts and bargain prices, with those little things called "customer service" and "help" thrown in for good measure..

Will they sell parts to rebuild myself or will they want to rebuild it?

Price it both ways. If it was $40 labor, I'd be on that faster then the fat kid in school after a free donut. Plus they do them everyday and probably come with a warranty.

I quit messing with starters, generators and alternators year ago. The local rebuilder does it, and gives a warranty.

Ok sounds like a good idea. Part of it is me wanting to learn something new but it is cheap I might just have them rebuild it.

The nice part of the shop is that they test the fields and the armature and can turn the commutator if needed.

I second the rebuilder. They can be pretty inexpensive- I had an alternator rebuilt and it cost me $100. That was in Hawaii though, so I'd imagine on the mainland it would be a little less. Lifetime warranty, and I could look the guy in the eyes that rebuilt it. Finally, they soda blasted the case, and it looked great afterward.

I keep taking my Powerstroke starter back to the same little shop here because I can stand at the counter and watch them test it and fix it. Plus buying $200 junk remans from the parts store, suck. I can normally walk out for $40 or less.

A local shop charged me $70 to rebuild a starter for a Ford 390 and about the same for an RX-7.

Had the local guy do the alt for my SC400 cost me 80 or 90$ but it came with a warranty, and wasn't the damn 300$ junk reman from advance or anywhere else. Lasted longer than the rest of the motor.

If you're reasonably handy it's not that hard to replace the parts in a starter yourself.

We have a local place that does most of my starter and alternator work if I can't be bothered to do it. I had them rewind an alternator to put out more amperage, and 3 years, 4 cars, and 2 owners later, and it still works great. I seem to recall it being just over $100 in labor and like $60 or $70 in parts, but compared to the $400 alternatives, it was a bargain.

+1 on local rebuild, plus you keep the money local and know it is done correctly. I don't think a guy in mexico making 5$ a day really cares if the rebuild is done correctly.
