Found this on CL back in December, listed in Sarasota, FL. Wish the original ad still existed to share. Car was originally posted for $650 without the parts.
Two owner '67 Amazon wagon with a E36 M3 ton of parts. Current owner since '72 (said he paid $200 for it then from a junkyard) is/was a drummer who went to high school with Stephen Tyler, another Aerosmith member and the guy who wrote "I love Rock & Roll". Owner currently lives in RI and was just able to make it back to FL last week. We traded lots of phone calls on scheduling and I kept learning more about him. As a drummer he has always been "broke/rich" and has owned a number of interesting cars including this one which was his daily for years 'cause it carried his gear. He figures it has close to 390K on it. He says he has a DB4 and a pristine P1800 in storage in NYC where he lived/played for years.
In an early phone call:
Me: "So who have you played with? Anyone I know?"
Charlie: "Yeah, I toured with Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Buddy Guy (he's an shiny happy person, btw. I called him that, right after he called me one. Then he fired me.) and a number of other blues acts. (paraphrasing here)
Me, to myself: I have got to meet this guy...
He still owns a TON of really nice drum gear and has been doing some gigs in the SE and Europe with some metal bands... he's 63. In between drumming gigs he is/was a Vietnam vet, a NY firefighter and in the Foreign Legion for 2 years.
Got to meet his Dad too, an ex-Navy man who spent 37 years in the NYFD who looked to be possibly dealing with some tougher older issues (dementia, etc.) but still sharp, i.e. he remembered my name at the end of the day.
Also, he is probably who I have to thank for what I dragged home. I made an offer on the whole package, Charlie countered with more than I had brought. I said ok, let's split the difference. He wouldn't budge, said he would get it back on the road himself. I could tell this was a very emotional sale for him. I said "Ok, thanks for your time" and headed home (1H45M away). 10 minutes later I get the call, do the u-turn, make the deal at my price. Charlie said his Dad told him he needed to let go. Thanks Dad.
First time in a long time I had walked away from a deal. I knew this was more emotion than money to him and was half expecting a call in a week or so, but was totally fine if it never came. It was a great day with some fine characters either way. I just hope he calls me when he finds the keys (and possibly when he chooses to sell his DB4...right)
Here she is:
I hope in 18 years I'm telling this story to the next potential owner.
The B18 in the car has a holed piston and is now an anchor. It came with a newer B20 (rough also) but I have already cleaned the FI head from it with plans to put it on the B18/20 I am building for my '67 coupe.
