About halfway through the thread. These guys did some great work to bring that car back. I really approve of builds where they take junk and make it a car. Not so much the builds that take a car and make it junk.
This is it. This is what Rat Rods should be, built from junk, not turned into junk.
And yes I'm one of those curmudgeons who thinks it was stupid to strip the paint off the Karman Ghia and piss on it.
Exactly.
It's the difference between "patina" and "distressed". The former is what a quality thing gets after much use. The latter is what you do to a cheap thing to make it seem expensive to fools.
I'm thinking of getting YOU CAN'T FAKE PATINA carved on my tombstone.
I love survivor cars. Unrestored, original paint and interior. But there does come a time when it becomes necessary to replace/restore/repaint just to save the car from further deterioration. After all, paints primary purpose is a corrosion inhibitor.

whoa! Lets see more about this car, your profile shows a blue bird, not a black one.

In reply to plance1:
In 1959, my grandparents bought the black 57 you see above. My dad liked it so much that he bought one for himself, the blue car in my profile garage, when he got out of the army in 1964. Both are still in the family. The black one was my grandmother's last car; she drove it until she was nearly 90, with no power steering, brakes, etc. It got that patina from parking nose-in to a garage w/no door for 30 years, but it's a solid California car with no rust at all. About 2 years ago, my dad had the car mechanically freshened up but left the body alone at my request. It has some new parts, but the 4-bbl 312 and Ford-o-Matic are original. He drives it to church, and that's about it.
My dad had the blue car repainted in the mid-80s, then lost interest in it. It didn't leave the garage for about 10 years before I convinced him to let me hot rod it. Details are in the garage profile, so I won't get into them here unless you have specific questions. I drive it about once a week.
So anyway, now we have one original and one modified for the sake of variety.

That car goes too far if you consider a mountain's worth of awesomeness as "too far". Also, it's got nothing to do with rat rods.
We strayed and were posting bodys w/ extended wheels a page or two back.
Maybe if he grafted some of those fat swoopy fenders off the back tires it would be half as ugly.

Not a bad deal
... If the trailer goes with it.
Wow. This thread has taken a life of it's own. Did not expect that.
Oh, and that is REALLY ugly.

Yeah, it's flounder time. The '39 dodge midget guy never said "Rat Rod".

Especially since neither a 39 dodge or Midget were bad looking cars to begin with.
This is pretty much the only rod that's really appealed to me.
Yup.
My standards are lower .....
In reply to Swank Force One:
That is neither a Rat Rod, nor a Rat Rod gone too far.
In reply to bravenrace:
Neither is at least 50% of what's been posted in this thread in the last 3-4 pages, as mentioned previously.
Also why i simply said "Rod."
In reply to Swank Force One:
I'm partial to this one, but again, not a Rat Rod....
