Do NOT get a AWD Charger RT with the Hemi. Just don't.
In reply to No Time :
Lotta good options I hadn't thought of. Didn't Genesis briefly get a version of the Stinger that looked a little better?
calteg said:Another question for y'all in the frozen North. When we visited SLC this past weekend, there were 7ft snow banks on the side of the road. The locals indicated this was an unusual amount of snow, even for them, but it made me worried that a sedan might not have enough ground clearance. Is an SUV the better option? In my mind I have an irrational resistence to one, even though it seems like they make a lot of sense in this scenario.
In the valley it's almost unnecessary. UDOT does an amazing job of keeping up with the roads. Heck, even up by the ski resorts they do a great job, out there all night keeping it clean.
In Tahoe in 6 years I've only really "needed" the ground clearance of my Jeep a handful of times. Plenty of coworkers driving up in stock ride height Subarus and Volvos etc with no trouble. I have had the snow rolling over the hood a few times, but I probably shouldn't have been out of the house!

Do people who shop with a 50K budget, ever consider a Suzuki SX4?
Bumping my own thread, another option that I completely forgot existed: Genesis 3.3T AWD sedan. This one ranks pretty high up the list currently.

I wouldn't know.

One of the few times in which the Charger is a better option, although German cars are off the table.
(I capital-H hate Chargers. I have driven DOS-era video games with better steering feel, and this is not hyperbole. The steering has absolutely zero feedback.)

Is the Chrysler 300 the same story? I've kept the rwd V8 version in mind for a future daily/highway car.
In reply to dannyp84 :
Drive one and form your own opinion, but yes same chassis. The lack of feedback feels dangerous to me.

Gonna need some clarification. You're saying the Charger is better than the Genesis sedan? But then you salm the Charger for it's lack of feedback?

Yes. The Genesis feels like a GTO in how large it is yet small inside because of how poorly space is utilized.
I am also not really thrilled with Hyundai engines. They both use the same or similar trans IIRC. Hyundai gets a lot of components from German suppliers now.
It is kind of weird to get a Hyundai up in the air and see a ZF transmission staring back at you.

Volvos are owned by Geely now. They are actually somewhat reliable since the Chinese bought them.

*looks at the 305k mile P2 in the driveway* Oh?
I bought a P2 specifically because of all of my customers' cars, the P2s required the least amount of work other than gas/tires/oil. After 120k miles of ownership I feel like I made the right choice.
No air pump. No timing chains. No interiors that fall apart, no modules buried in the floor where saltwater eats them. No EGR passages to clog. No berking ZF transmissions.

Pretty sure my P3 has a ZF trans. It was dealer maintained until I bought it 5k miles ago. What do I need to know?

I did not think Dodge ever sold a Charger / Challenger in V8 AWD form. I thought AWD meant 6 cylinder.
I know there are conversions around but I didn't think any came from the factory as an option.

It should have an Aisin-Warner TF80 transmission, or a Getrag if it is a manual. Volvo never used ZF transmissions as far as I can recall, they have had a long relationship with A-W.

They did but they are rare as hen's teeth.
The police cars tend to be 3.6 since they idle a lot and the Hemis eat their valvetrains when they idle.
In reply to Pete. (l33t FS) :
Strangely, the squad cars on Govdeals says otherwise. Sometimes its harder to find a RWD Hemi vs. the AWD. It could be the person writing up the ad doesn't know the difference, however.
I wish they would bring back the Mazdaspeed 3 in 4WD form - I'd think it would sell well unless you needed more ground clearance.

May be a fleet thing? I have only seen AWD in V6s in the civilian wild, except for a lonely V8 that had me scratching my head, because I didn't know they did that.
Police cars are 99% Fords here, because they build the engines here. Mostly the utility, not the sedan. (Meaning 3.7l Explorers, not 3.7l Tauruses) A friend had a Taurus as his patrol vehicle and reported that it could really, really scoot when asked.
Ohio state patrol does use silver Chargers, I will admit to not knowing if RWD/AWD or V6/V8, but I have heard from people that the PDs have largely stopped buying V8 Chargers because they do not cotton to being idled for most of an 8 hour shift, switching to V6s or Fords.
A word on auctions, fleets WILL life out vehicles when they know they are going to be a liability. A local largish towing company would sell their 6.0 Powerstroke trucks at 150k miles, period, and usually get angry calls in a few months from the smaller company that had bought the hot potato I was told that they would have preferred Dodges but Ford gave them a significant cash incentive, so they bought Fords and lifed them out after a year or two.

Just to be pedantic, some of the early 700s had a zf gearbox. But, we are not really talking about that...

It's already here!
This might be more on the appliance side but what about a Prius or Corolla Sedan. I think both are available with awd now.
