So reading on this subject I learned this: The best place to mount the X-pipe for maximum flow is toward the front of your exhaust system, close to your transmission. To find the exact position, try this old hot rodding trick—take a crayon and draw a line on the entire length of your exhaust system. Make sure the line is clearly visible and has a thick wax buildup. Then go for a quick drive and immediately examine the exhaust when you get home. Wherever the crayon wax stops melting is the ideal spot to start your X-pipe installation.
But... my celica has very limited room underneath, and it seems like the best place would be right where the front u joint is. That way the driveshaft has ample room to move without exhaust collision. But again, space is limited. One thought I had was to cross the driver's side pipe to the passenger side, connect x pipe there and continue on. The other issue is my X pipe is the type that has inlet and outlet straight off, and not in the typical "X" shape.
Thoughts?
Theoretical X/H-pipe placement NEVER HAPPENS in the real world.
In practice, it always happens rigth after the trans mount, because that is the only place you can put it where it will clear the transmission and the driveshaft while having acceptable ground clearance (read: any at all)
Ok, thanks. Well, I guess it's "sayonara" to 2.5" of ground clearance on the chassis.
You could cut 2.5" of floor space.....
Pipes straight out the hood?
I actually entertained hater pipes but my body is too nice for that sort of shenanigans.
What about y pipe into a single oval? Or do you have room for a 3" single? I tend to do a bigger single than duals when clearance permits. My datsun has a 2.5" y into single 3" and it works well, no room for duals unless they run next to each other so it made more sense to use larger pipe and 1 less muffler
My setup (1uzfe) will be off both headers, angle in toward trans mount, X pipe, out of x pipe splits to each side, into single chamber muffs, then exit side of car just behind doors. Not a whole lot of room since the car was designed to run single exhaust (either side) but that pipe size was 7/8". No joke.
