Speaking of ZAVs... Cbergerud posted this up on another board we both visit. Seeing as he hardly ever comes over here, I'm stealing them from him:

On second thought this one isn't really "zombie apocalypse", it's more "everyone dress like heavy metal musicians apocalypse". Which is better.

I miss our ZAV, sometimes too. But my dad and I are working on a new one so its okay. Although, nothing says killing zombies with a truck like a 400 big block mopar screaming at 6000 rpms.

I think the conversion to a water-cooled engine takes away some of the zombieproofing on that VW. Get one of those buggers on the roof gnawing on your radiator hoses and you might find yourself in big trouble - never mind the inevitable tree branch that's just a bit lower than you think it is...

My vote so far is for RossD's truck. That thing looks like it should have zombie parts stuck in its teeth.

I would hate to see that mess blow a rad hose. Major environmental incident right there.

I like it because it's built on the Blazer chassis, so you can pass through from the front to the rear camper portion easily. The fridge works off either propane or electric, the heater is propane and will just burn you up, and it sleeps 4 if you have the option package that includes the overhead cots. It also has a stove, sink, and water storage tank on board. Mine has 3.73 gears, but cruises the interstate at 70 easy with the 31 inch tires. I think they all came with a 5k hitch from the factory. It's a pretty neat rig overall. The biggest downside is the main foldout bed is just too short, I mean like 4.5 feet, which is crazy. I plan to build a padded extension for my legs!

From the pictures it seems that the sleeping configuration is to lower the table and then sleep diagnal covering both benches. Agreed, each bench looks too small to sleep on. Maybe place your head rearward and bend you knees over the front seats.
Boy, they all look pretty sqaut on the rear springs.
Does that make steering feel loose?

You mention a trailer hitch. With that much weight already on the rear, I can not imagine much more tounge weight could be handled.

You actually remove the table and the pole and top hang on the closet wall, then the benches fold out. I tried sleeping wall to wall, front to rear, diagnal and it just wasn't enough room for me (6'2") although my wife liked it just fine. I think a small air mattress on the floor might be a better alternative if there's room.

Seems like most of them squat, but the steering feels fine. A little lighter feeling than my Suburban, but not bad at all. The stock spings just don't handle the weight that well. Some guys add air bags. I'm not sure if I'll go that route or just put a 3/4 ton leaf pack in.

I have only towed small things like utility trailers with dirt bikes. For dirt bikes or jet skis it's fine as is. The biggest problem there is backing because it's very difficult to see the trailer. I doubt it would do very well with a 5k load though, regardless of how it's rated. I'd want at the very least air bags or better springs, higher load rated tires, and some type of sway control.
