A shame, no matter how it happened. The Gene dying/wife suicide thing was my first thought, but the dog didn't fit the story. I guess we will find out in due time.
Get Shorty is a truly wonderful movie, and he is great in it.

Word for word what I thought. However the dog was supposedly in a crate or a closet or something
In reply to Mr_Asa :
Dog in closet, but no indication if closet door was open or closed. If open, it seems reasonable that the dog might have sought a smaller space for a sense of safety if it had consumed drugs that made it feel uncomfortable.
It gets weirder: They are now saying she appears to have been dead for much longer than him, maybe weeks more. So much she started to mummify! She was much younger than him btw (60 I believe). I am not sure I want to know what happened at this point!
Gene Hackman was one of those actors that you could almost guarantee a good movie out of. I think he was always likeable in his roles in some way. Did he ever play an unlikeable character? Even in The Firm, you end up feeling a bit sorry for him.
My mom let me go see the French connection by myself when I was like 16. Impressionable movie at that age. I have always liked Gene Hackman.

Oh, you absolutely hated Little Bill in Unforgiven. Or, at least, you were supposed to...

Oh. I thought he was supposed to be a role model?

Little Bill is a horrible person, but Hackman plays him with such charm, it's hard not to like him a little bit.
