He did it all!  And, some of it in excess but it is rare to find someone so "all-around."

From the article:
Kristofferson was a Golden Gloves boxer, rugby star and football player in college; received a master’s degree in English from Merton College at the University of Oxford in England; and flew helicopters as a captain in the U.S. Army but turned down an appointment to teach at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, to pursue songwriting in Nashville.

Horrible song?  WTF.

It won a grammy for best country song.  What?

He probably meant the one that Janis Joplin beat to death.

In reply to ShawnG :

Nope. Although K's voice did not do well with that song and J did make it famous, it was better than the referenced pop tripe  some folks thought was great Country Music (I didn't mean to hurt his feeling and make him start cussing and all, but as you can tell, I was not a fan of that song. The group The Highwaymen, did much better songs, than the referenced one)

I'm with you. So much talent and they end up most known for a song about a bandit and three workplace casualties.  Not his best work.

He was also the most famous trucker of all time, Rubber Duck. I watched that movie too many times growing up.

I'm still a Skynard fan, even after all these years.
But not everyone is.
I've never cussed at any of the folks I know that don't care for 'em

But I know I'm a bit odd, so...

His voice fit certain songs very well, but I couldn't listen to any of his albums in one sitting.

He was at his best as a songwriter.

My favorite of his performances was as an actor in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.

To be fair, winning a Grammy is entirely unrelated to musical quality.

And my favorite of his acting performances  was Whistler in the Blade trilogy.
