Hey all I am looking for a nice get away from the cold here in the Minneapolis area...preferably someplace warm... I am recently single (3 years) 36 and male looking for a nice quiet place to have a little R&R after the holidays and break up... I am not much of a partier and will probably going alone (or taking my Dad) since all my friends are broke and work normal 9-5 jobs...
I love history junk and to read, I love good food and quiet...or a party if that's what I want...
I am looking to spend under a grand for a 2 or 3 day weekend somewhere, I don't want to rent a car.
I have looked at vegas... 66 and sunny sound nice and cheap! The Mirage for 2 nights and air fare from MSP for 350 ish... I do like the idea of the Hoover Dam...
Any other ideas?
Shoot!
the hoov' is pretty cool, though less so a bit now that you cant drive over it anymore. the new bridge is spectacular, though you cant actually see the dam from it. get the tour, even the cheapo 2 hour tour is really neat, but i recommend popping for the longer one. theres a lot of non-gambling things to do in vegas, from shows to desert expeditions to heli-tours, and all of it cheaper than other similar tourist traps. the small-craft plane ride over the grand canyon is also a must-do. not cheap, but man what a view.
the wife and i vacationed there, then honeymooned there, then went back 6 more times. we love it there. GO!

If you do Vegas and like history check out Techatticup. It's out of the way, but well worth the trip.

I live in Vegas. If you're expecting "warm" this time of year, you're wrong. Oh, it's warmer than Minneapolis, so if a high of 60 and a low of 40 is your idea of warm, come for a visit.
You can walk across the new bridge and get a view of the dam, but you won't see the dam while driving over the bridge, due to a really high "jersey barrier".
You can also walk right on the dam, and even drive over it, but it's now a road to nowhere, dead-ending on the AZ side.
Vegas. You don't have to hit the casinos, just chill at the hotel/resort, etc.
There's the Vegas Speedway there, lots of car museums, some great driving roads nearby, rental places that rent some fun cars, etc.
Indoor karting, trackday experiences and more.
There's also this:

Solitary confinement at the local slammer??? On the bonus note, that would be really cheap.
San Diego?
San Palo?
San Lucas?
San Francisco?
San Pueblo?
Any other jackassed thing I'm forgetting or misspelling?
Recently broken up, eh? Maybe New Orleans will change your mind about what kind of vacation you want . It's great for a 3-day trip. My dad and I went a few years back for a weekend. Plenty of stuff to see and do both at night and during the day.
The "no car" thing does suit Vegas.

Vegas was what I came here to say. Sorry to hear about the breakup... but Vegas has showgirls!

Not sure if I could make it on a $1,000 budget, but I guess it could be done. Myrtle Beach or Daytona Beach maybe? Daytona is a bit warmer than Myrtle and both are pretty quiet this time of year. I would look into something in the Alabama/North Florida Gulf coast area as well. Daytona is pretty rich in automotive history and has some cool stuff to see.

That surprises me. I was just about to start a thread asking about Vegas. My son is getting married late next month. After all is said and done (als just bought a house), they're not going to have any money left for a honeymoon. They've been living together for 4 years, so its probably not a big deal, but I was thinking of surprising them with a 3-4 day trip to Vegas. Maybe not a great idea this time of year.
Why not Charleston, SC? We're warmer than where you are most of the time and there's definitely a lot of history here. You could easily stay downtown and not need to rent a car and there's lots to do that's free. Just a thought.....
Sorry about the breakup...even when they are for the best they are hard.

It shouldn't. It's a desert, but it ain't the Sahara. We get winter here, it's just not brutal winter. Don't forget that we're also at about 2500' elevation.
It also shouldn't surprise you because you can look up the weather anywhere on lots of these newfangled websites on this Internet thingy. :)
I second New Orleans. Check out the WWII Museum for you history side and then ride karts at NOLA motorsports park. Good food is everywhere.
The Mirage has a $25/night resort fee. That really isn't out of line for Vegas, but keep that in mind if you are comparing costs to staying somewhere else.

Combine a bit of New Orleans nightlife, with some good history, warm weather and places to relax. All in a very walkable/no car environment = Key West. Its the off season so it should be pretty cheap if you can find manageable airfare.
Hey Guys and Gals, Thanks for the girlfriend support and the neat vacation ideas! I may have to put this on the back burner for a bit... Business is booming and it looks like 55 hour weeks for the next month, and no time off (save for my "weekends")
On the plus side in a month I will have 4 weeks paid time off and a fat cash roll to finally start my resto on my ole muscle car!
I do think I am going to squeak a little jaunt out of the artic tundra of Minnesota for a weekend... And from MSP they have non-stop flights to Vegas hourly... And to me 60 is hot this time of year! I seriously would be in my trunks and the only one at the pool! Perhaps a topless pool, you know single and all.
But thanks for all the info on Vegas!
Then maybe in effort to get out of the lousy "Smarch" weather I will take a week to the Keys... I just found out my buddy has a place to stay there... hmm
I want to go to Antigua.. but I am biased, there is a boat there I want to look at

I'd say come to Florida if it wasn't for the no rental car requirement.

What kind?
Nothing helps sooth a break up like hookers and gambling. Vegas baby.
