Iphone and me

Ok. I will be the first to admit, I love techno gadgets. Under almost all circumstances, I exhibit some level of self-control that usually prevents me from making expensive purchases. However, when it came to the iphone I let my geektronic side prevail. I was a good boy and I waited for two things. One, a price drop; and two, a second generation iPhone. I also spent a good amount of time researching the thing.

Was it worth it? Helz yea son! Apple came out with one fly product. Sure, it won't connect to my tom tom for some reason, nor does it seem to like to connect to wi-fi, but it replaces my old and worn out ipaq and makes a great phone. Plus, I can surf the internet while driving (kidding). Heck, I'm creating this post on it right now.

Why am I writing this on a car / racing forum? Good question. Call of boredom, call it 1:30 in the morning, or maybe just a geek moment. What ever. I'd you're on the fence and are considering buying one, do it. It really does have a ton of practical functions and it's not too terribly pricey.

I am jealous. I have a friend at work who has an Iphone since he is also a car nut he went out and installed the Dynolicious application on the phone. That application alone almost makes the iphone worth while.

We tested my mazdaspeed6 with the app and it was estimating that my car would do the 1/4 mile in 14.6 seconds @ 104 mph I pulled .95Gs in a corner and .86Gs in straight line accel and .96Gs under braking.

It was fun.

I've never had a problem with connecting to wifi, it seems to prefer wifi.

I can't get one. Once you've had a Treo, you pretty much have to get a handheld PC if you want to switch to anything else.

Verizon has something that is pretty good that works like the iPhone. Is it the Dare?

I've only tried to hook up to two wi-fi networks. One was at my house it and is impossible to connect anything to it for some reason. The other was at Starbucks where it easily connected, but it did not have any access to the internet or iTunes.

Let me tell you why I don't have the iPhone:

I got in under the wire with Sprint's SERO and a MotoQ. 30 bucks a month for unlimited data? Yes please. In fact, I'll take two.

Yup! Can't get it no mo'. It's gone daddy gone. I mean, existing customers obviously are still leaning back all smuglike, but if anybody wants into the SERO Cool Dudes Club, they are SOL.

A buddy got one unlocked and is using T Mobile service you might try looking into that route.

I wonder if a T-Mobile unlocked one would work with their t-mobile to go plan. I like the phone, but I'm not leaving my $.10 / minute plan.

I have verizon and I tried the Dare when I upgraded my phone a few weeks ago. I've had a touch for a while, and it's proven itself very useful to me, so I liked the idea of the iphone. The Dare is complete and utter garbage compared to the iphone/touch. I kept it for 3 hours and returned it for a regular verizon phone. I can't understand how anyone could get a Dare after using the iphone...

I'm under $30/mo w/ unlimited data SERO 500 min plan on my new Blackberry Curve. I agree with the intent of the original poster, even though I didn't (couldn't through sprint) consider the iPhone. The new technogadgetry on these nifty phones is awesome. I always cheaped out with the free/cashback phone offer, but I'm really happy I decided to pay the premium for the crackberry. Even without the official blackberry service, I can surf the "full" internet quickly and easily, run the gmail and gmaps programs, GPS nav, its sync'd to my work outlook so I never miss a meeting and have the call in info everywhere (like the end of a long lunch!) and plenty of other goodies. Heck the camera is actually pretty darn good, it takes well focused/exposed shots that are respectable to view on a computer. I even hacked the software a bit to enable the native blackberry branded browser so I can successfully OTA download apps and things.

I use web access, gmail, and gmaps/nav most often. Really useful and it would be tough to get by without them going forward. Hopefully I can stay grandfathered in on my SERO plan indefinitely. Wicked good deal.

I hate Verizon.

Really liked the IPhone.

Thought I could make the transition from my (very) old Treo.

I'll be selling an IPhone soon (including Dynolicious, a case, and a couple of other car apps).

There is a fundamental difference in the cell technology. AT&T uses higher quality technology, but their towers have shorter range, which means they need more towers to cover a given area.

Bottom line- in a small market rural area (like where I live), I simply can't get adequate cell service from AT&T. I also need it for business, and can't manage docs and spreadsheets as easily.

The IPhone is probably a good media manager for people in metropolitan areas. Doesn't cut it for me.

I don't have a cell phone, but if I did, I would want an iPhone.

Oh, I'd love an iPhone. But as long as I can suck at the SERO teat, I will. My Palm Centro does 90% of what I'd like it to do, and to be honest, it keeps me from boards like this while I'm at work.

Wasn't there supposed to be a price drop this past week on the iTouch - to get it more inline with iPhone pricing (and allow for newer models to move in)? I never did see or hear anything official on it, not that I was looking real hard though.

My favorite app is Jaadu VNC. I can use my computer from anywhere.

I played with my sisters Iphone last weekend. it is cool. She likes it but is completely put off by the cost. She's an editor of a mag so she got an Iphone for free, with free service for life. Gotta love perks.

The iphone is selling well but it's not being purchased by those who need a "smart phone". Of course as soon as they came out everyone had to check it out, but in the end everyone is sticking with their blackberries. Those guys @ RIM seem to know what their doing.

I have a 3G and love it. When you are under 3G coverage the internet is really amazingly fast. Wifi coverage is even better. The funny thing is the phone function isn't the best, if you want a good phone...then get something else. Not everything gets connected on the first try. It's great as a multimedia device that can also do phone calls. I haven't even touched my 5G iPod in a long time.

The dare is junk.

I spent about 4 hours at the verizon store the past two days and i played with it. Maybe i have fatter fingers then most spolied 13 year old kids that get these from there parents but i could not get half of the stuff to work. its complicated and dumb.

Obviously you don't have an iPhone. You don't get a much "smarter" phone than the iPhone since it is a mini computer and an extension of your laptop.

Now many people had so much money invested in their Blackberries that it didn't make sense to trash them.

What I liked when the first iPhone came out, was thats when AT&T launched free razors w/ 2-year plans. And that was the day I picked mine up. Luckily I did it at Best Buy so they had no iPhone lines to deal with.
