A place to add things that have just blown your mind.

Old news, but I just heard this: Full Metal Jacket was filmed ENTIRELY in the greater London area because Kubrick doesn't like to travel. This scene was shot in East London. #mindblown

When I was a kid, The Fox and the Hound was one of my favorite Disney cartoons.

Me, rewatching it at 30 for the first time in decades:

Near Death Valley National Park a road runner ran across the Holiday Inn Express parking lot I was staying at. It was odd to me how little they are because I expected road runners to be big.

When I was a kid, I wondered why a Japanese guy like Mr. Miyagi dresses in an Army uniform when he gets drunk on the anniversary of his wife's death.  Mr. Miyagi was part of the 442nd Regiment Combat Team, made up of Japanese Americans, fighting in Italy in WWII. That is why he wears the US Army uniform, and was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Remember Cameron Fry and Ferris Beuller's relationship seemingly revolving around Ferris trying to get Cameron out of his shell?  Cameron arguing with himself how Ferris, "Will keep calling,He'll keep calling..." how Ferris says Cameron's dad hates him, how Cameron says he'll finally stand up to his old man and take the heat?

What if Ferris is Cameron's imaginary friend?

My dad graduated High school with drafting experience and spent 50 years as a mechanical engineer designing and drawing prints/plans for fire sprinkler systems.

In 2005 I stopped in to see him at Tyco Grinnell and he was still drawing prints by hand. He never picked up CAD or a computer his entire life. They would scan his prints to use them. He retired when the economy tanked in 2007/08.

At age 80 he picked up an iPad and ended up teaching a senior citizen iPad class.

All those years as a mechanical engineer and not one day of college.  Try that today!

That surprises you? They knowingly put out cars that would explode when rear-ended up to the Panther-chassis Crown Vic, knowingly put out 4.6L 2V heads that would spit out the spark plugs from not threading the heads enough, knowingly put out 4.6L 3V heads that seize the spark plugs, knowingly put out egregiously false MPG ratings on the C-Max, and knowingly put out bad engines in the Focus ST, and that's just what I can remember off the top of my head.

(Notes that I currently own 2 Fords, too...)

There's been less time between the Vietnam War and the movie Forrest Gump, than from the movie until now.

Knowingly implies the engineers had a clue...

And the exploding Panthers had a perfectly good tank placement for the time...they just built them for too long.  You never hear about 240 Volvo's being flaming death traps, and the fuel tank is in roughly the same spot.

Something that is considered pretty damn difficult today!

The guidance computer was "coded" using rope memory, which created binary code (1's and 0's) or machine language code by wrapping the individual wires in and out of magnetic loops. Imagine debugging that!

So words get out, cars depreciate like a rock, I buy one for a song.  Mine's a 3 pedal car.  No transmission issues.  Except for the transmission, there will be spare parts galore for many years.smiley

On a related note, I JUST realized on my most recent viewing onf 12 Monkeys that the whole thing could take place in 1996 and all of the "future" events could be in his head (and they all mirror things that happen in '96).
