I don't need a laptop, as evidence by the fact that I've used mine like...3 times this year. Part of the reason I wanted something closer to a laptop was because I miss some of the functionality of a laptop - ie plugging it in to a TV to show photos to people, or home movies, or a funny youtube video.
All of that really can be accomplished with AppleTV or a Lightning to HDMI adapter.
Anytime I need a laptop for work I just take mine from work. It's a HP Elitebook i7 16gb ram. Not like it matter, most of our work is done via server anyway. With an iPad and mouse I should be able to utilize an RDP connection and operate mostly as normal if neccesary.

I would argue that if you need a laptop, get a laptop. Besides, you can't tie up the iPad when toddler wants it, which she will. I don't deny the attraction and usefulness of the iPad. Hell, there are five of them in my house right now. But they ain't laptops.
It is funny that the OP thinks that he now has an ipad, at best you have one you can use when the kid is asleep. I got my first ipad when my kid was a toddler, pretty soon I realized it was just easier to get my own. Your kid is going to want it all the time, even if you limit their screen time, you will constantly be trying to get whatever nasty stuff kids secrete out of their fingers off the screen so you can see what you are typing. And the big kid proof cases are a must, but they drove me nuts.
