My daughter bought a 2013 Highlander a few years back, it's white and the original owner had clear bra put on the hood, the side mirrors, behind the door handles (really? that's just annoying) and the trailing edges of the doors.
Over the last year it's developed what looks like mold underneath, truly disgusting looking. I finally told her to leave it with me for the day and I would remove the clear bra...bad idea Dad.
I used a heat gun to soften the plastic and then plastic scrapers to remove it...but the adhesive was left behind and it appears the heat turned it into an impenetrable substance. The worst part is that the mold is UNDERNEATH the adhesive! So it looks just as bad.
I tried Goo-gone, gasoline, denatured alcohol, mineral spirits...tried a tiny section with acetone even, and while it worked, it was literally 10 minutes of soak and scrub to remove an area the size of my thumbnail.
Considering heating it up again to see if that helps, but don't want to make matters worse, if that's possible.
Any brilliant ideas short of sanding?
3m stripe eraser wheel or two would be worth a shot.

I'll give that a shot, thanks
For anyone going to try similar, rather than a heat gun, use a steamer. For some reason the added moisture makes all the difference for older stuff for me.
I'd still give steam a shot. If steam alone won't do it, try it with some solvents or such at the same time. (Less fire hazard than with a heat gun)

Is that a thing?
I'll Google it...
Behind the door handles actually makes sense, that area gets scratched up more than you'd think.

I've seen that factory installed. Don't remember the brand of car, though.

I use those almost daily. They work great for removing that. I Googled it and came up with several types.... " Rubber Eraser Wheel Car Decal Remover For 3M Glue Remove Adhesive Sticker" on ebay for alot cheaper.
I don't recommend going full throttle with them. One they can bellow smoke. Two they can heat the paint too hot and discolor it when ran at high RPM. Especially on white.
You will still need some adhesive Remover to remove it all. I use SEM Prep Solve and some paper shop towels to clean up the residue

I was in to point that put, but ya beat me to it!
After it got nasty looking, yea gotta go. But I'd lean to replacing that, as the other stuff goes away.
