I go to Oshkosh every year for the big fly-in. At the campgrounds, they show movies on a huge blow up screen. This year they debuted "Planes."
Totally cool, that they let us see it a full week before anyone else in the world. The grounds hold 2700. There were 3,000. And they turned away over 5,000. I got there a6:00 and it was packed. People even tried to bum rush the fences!
The movie is to aircraft what "Cars" is to automobiles. They got stuff right. The nuts and bolts of a PT-6 are correct. The Corsair's cowl flaps move accurately.
I'm an adult, and I thought it ruled. Can't wait to take the nephews to see it.
VINDICATION!
There was a thread last week where a small portion of posters were looking forward to this movie, everyone else being dismissive.
Now I just need to borrow my nieces and go see it!
yet another addition to the Pixar universe...

I just told my sister to take my nephew to see it. (They live too far away, or I would do it.)
I seldom go to the theater, but I'll rent it when it comes out.
Coming soon : 'Boats', followed by 'Trains' and later 'Construction Equipment'....

I think I will watch every one of those, in theaters.

The concern was that it was Disney and not Pixar doing it, so I think it's not wholly surprising there was sketicism. Also the animation quality didn't look quite up to Pixar's standards- but if they got the story and the hardware right, it's worth seeing regardless...

When do they release!! I need to see these movies. Trains would be hard. George Carlin really had that market pegged with Thomas.
I will see it, but I'm concerned about two things:
1) From what I understood, it was originally supposed to be a "direct to DVD" release, no theater and Disney decided to add it to the summer lineup. Wonder why it wasn't planned originally and what changed to make them think it's worth doing?
2) I'm not a plane guy. I know a lot more car guys than plane guys. On a kid level, maybe it doesn't make a difference (Thomas the Tank Engine, for example), but I wonder if it'll struggle because the "plane" guys will enjoy all the nuance that would be lost on the general public. Cars had a bunch of hard core car guy items, but still appealed to the unwashed masses because cars are so integrated into our lives. Planes aren't as much.
Then again, a good story is a good story, and I trust Pixar at that level. Regardless of the animation, they're fantastic storytellers.....

They already made the last two (Thomas the Tank Engine and Bob the Builder...)
Technically, Planes is not a Pixar film but a Disney film.... but I still want to see it. I'm as much a "plane" guy as I am a carguy.
I believe Planes came out of the agreement that Disney had with Pixar before Disney bought Pixar. If their original agreement had fallen through, Disney got the rights to all of the characters/idea/etc. that had been done up to that point. I believe that included the Cars world.
Planes grew out of that "limbo" area between Disney/Pixar and thus is not a 'Pixar" movie. However, John Lasseter (creative genius behind a lot of the Pixar movies) moved over to be in charge of Disney Animation when Pixar came onboard. So, while it is not "Pixar", it is not that far removed from them.
I think the most visible differences will be in the quality of the animation. If you compare Planes to Monsters U, you can tell Planes was not a Pixar film. The CG quality in MU and the short before it are just in another class. We are talking looks like real footage, and not a computer generated world.

I saw MU (again, I've got two kids), and I wasn't that impressed with the animation. To me, the landscape imagery in Brave was much more realistic.

Only seen the trailers but I have a feeling that they were trying to match the visuals of "Cars" not really go hyper realistic.
I was talking about Monsters University.

Don't forget Theodore the Tugboat, used to come on PBS about the time of Thomas the Tank Engine.
So is there anythign different between the story of this and any of the other generic, "small town hero wants to win the big race" stories?
The story is decent. You don't need to be a wingnut to enjoy it. Remember all the fun you had with the little things in "Cars?" Its like that for us.
The difference in story is Lightning McQueen is and always was a racecar. Dusty is a crop duster. I mean, c'mon, an AG plane. You're hard pressed to find 1/72 plastic models of AG Cats or AirTractors and they use one as a main character.
Not to ruin anything but...there is already a sequel. Straight from the director's mouth.
