I think I'm going to start hunting with an ex demo derby car.

Seems cheaper in the long run.

re: hollow points and snipers, there's also been a lot of data over the past few years that has pointed toward hollow point rifle rounds being more accurate at distance due to some kind of low pressure area or something formed by the hollow point. As far as I recall they're not really what we'd consider "true" hollow points, as they have a smaller hollow that won't spread on impact like a handgun hollow point round is supposed to, but they'd still be considered hollow point rounds in a legal case or whatever.

Those are the needle point hollow points, I have a decent stash of them loaded for my 30-06 700xcr. They did show to be slightly more accurate than the amax and fmj, but I attribute that to being boat tailed.

Unfortunately, I am running low on .22LR, .380, & .38, but I still have close to 1k RDS of .30 carbine and enough components to reload 4k RDS of 5.56 and about 300rds of .45 colt.

Rebel, about all that's on the shelves over here is the exotic calibers and 5.45/7.62x39......I've been plinking with my k98 8mm due to .22 being unobtainium, and I've been wishing I had a .45-70, as there is a E36 M3load sitting on shelves here.....lol

I wish I could find more large pistol primers though. :(

Hmmm . . . sounds like its worse than I thought. I was at a local store shortly after Sandy Hook and they were cleaned out, of everything. I was back in the same store last week and noticed there still wasn't much in the way of ammo, but they had at least 1/2 dozen AR/M4's on the wall, so I guess I figured the worst had passed.

The only thing that really hits me is the lack of .22. At least 2/3 of the time I go shooting, that's pretty much all I shoot. I bought a .22 with the approximate weight, grip angle and balance of my carry gun which, up until recently, I could shoot for pennies on the dollar to maintain basic proficiency. Apparently no so anymore. I suspect that theory might be behind the .22 shortage. I've heard some police departments have even purchased .22 versions of primary duty guns to save on training costs. Guess I should have grabbed a brick or two of .22 while I was up there.

I've heard the manufacturers won't catch up until this summer. Stores are going to have to limit sales if you ever want a chance to buy some. Of course there are ways around that.

Damnit yamaha send me some 45-70! Kinda surprised AKammo is still on the shelf there. Out herethat has mostly dried up and so has the 7.62x54r for Mosins. I was cleaning out the trunk of the car and found two bricks of 22 I bought last fall and forgot about. It was like christmas.

On the sniper thing, it is my understanding that the HPBT ammo they are using is called "OK" to kill people with because it is not designed to expand, which is banned by the Geneva Convention as being not "OK" to kill people with in war. The ammo that our government is buying, per the contracts published is largely expanding hollow point, or not "OK" to kill people with in war, but apparently "OK" to train and kill people with not at war. It all gets confusing, certainly.

Its all Hornady Lever Rev........which cost $Texas before this little panic.

AK pattern rifles are just not that popular in my area. In the cities, everybody is in love with "That thur glock for tay" And out in my area(rural), everyone seems to think a "Mah 16" AR is tha best thang EVUR" They are both wrong, horribly wrong.

Edit: Corrected spelling for the added amount of DERP and racial profiling.

They'd probably try to outlaw hollowpoints for civilian hands, but they probably know you're just a countersink and soft point away from one......

Hess I did a bit more digging and there are indeed legal documents supporting the use of hpbt ammo snipers use. Granted there is still controversy on them using it. It was also the Hague not Geneva ( common mistake) . However the ammo DHS is buying up is more along the lines of whatlaw enforcement uses.

yEAH, 7.62x39 is still sporadically on the shelves. .45acp, .22LR and .38spl (all relevant to me) are just no where to be found at anything resembling a reasonable price.

Reloading stuff is out there, just not all the time. What the USPSA crowd is basically doing is buying whatever they can whenever they see it, then every match just becomes a swap meet. People are also getting less picky about their loads. I normally shoot 124gn rounds in my open gun, but this weekend I was able to pick up 2000 115gn projectiles. 2000 of the wrong thing is way better than zero of the right thing.

Also, no one is practicing much anymore. Folks show up and shoot matches, and that's about it.

You guys are nuts. I just ordered a case of .40 S&W and after reading this thread I expected a wait order. "We have a couple here. I'll put your name on one if you can pick it up by Friday".

No problems.

Used to have a connection. I think he died though..... I bet we bought 5-6k rounds from him for a long time. I'd love to have the connection again.

In all honesty I don't really have anything against .40 SW I just don't have much use for it personally. My local shop basically can't move the things the same 4 guns in that caliber have been sitting on his shelves for more than 2 years. He does have a Beretta Brigadier Model 96 that I wouldn't mind trying but it is double action only.

Not ammo-related, but on 12/27 I backordered two 10-packs of AR15 PMags. They just shipped today.

The only ammo I've bought this year was some .22LR from Cabela's a while back. Everything else has been unavailable, or well above my price threshold.

Here's a mental image for you. We got a shipment of 45 ACP in the week before last. We sold more than two million rounds in 70 minutes. That's about 3000 rounds per minute, or about as fast as a minigun firing for one hour and ten minutes.

Sheesh.

How bad is the situation with defense-oriented 12ga, by the way? I only have a .30-06 so I haven't really looked but I've been thinking a decent shotgun might not be the worst thing to have around.
