http://www.vice.com/read/a-woman-stole-a-bus-in-new-york-after-the-driver-told-her-to-stop-smoking-vgtrn?utm_source=vicefbus

Around 7 AM Tuesday morning, a middle-aged woman boarded the M101 bus in the Upper East Side of Manhattan and lit a cigarette. The situation escalated quickly from there. Police report that the woman got into an argument with the bus driver, and after communicating with her bosses about the passenger, the driver pulled over so other riders could move to a safer bus—and so she could call the cops. As the driver was helping other passengers off the bus, the smoker allegedly jumped into the driver's seat and sped off with the vehicle. Fortunately for the citizens of New York, she only got about three blocks before another bus blocked the street, forcing the woman to stop. A dispatcher reached into the bus through the driver's side window, turned off the ignition, and boarded the bus to seize control of the situation. The woman told arresting officers that she took the vehicle because she was afraid she was being followed, according to a local NBC affiliate. This doesn't appear to have an amateur joyride, however. Gothamist spoke to the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which confirmed that the woman was a former bus driver who got fired last July.

Similar story in Minneapolis this week, except this guy was trying to get to work:

Metro Transit mechanic charged with stealing unattended bus to get to work The suspect was arrested late Wednesday as he sped toward the agency's South Garage.

A Metro Transit employee was charged Friday with felony motor vehicle theft for allegedly stealing an unattended commuter bus in order to make it to work on time.

Gregory J. Jennrich, 31, of South St. Paul, was arrested after a short joy ride toward the agency’s South Garage, where he told police he works as a mechanic.

The bus’s licensed Metro Transit driver reported it stolen about 9:50 p.m. Wednesday after returning from a scheduled break to find the vehicle missing, according to agency spokesman Howie Padilla. The driver had parked the Route 75 bus at a Holiday gas station near the intersection of Marie Avenue and S. Robert Street in West St. Paul, Padilla said.

Jennrich admitted to taking advantage of her absence after locking his keys in his car, jumping in the empty driver’s seat and speeding away, police said.

Officers used GPS technology to track the bus as it headed west on Interstate 494. Within minutes, Metro Transit and airport police, along with State Patrol officers, stopped it just east of 24th Avenue near the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Jennrich was detained without incident about 10 minutes after the original call, Padilla said. No passengers were on the bus at the time of the theft.

Jennrich told police that he was concerned about getting to work on time, according to the criminal complaint. He did not have permission to drive or take the bus.

Padilla said Friday that Jennrich’s employment status will be addressed within coming weeks and Metro Transit will conduct an internal investigation.

She lot a cigarette and they felt it was necessary to evacuate the bus? A bit over the top isn't it?

That's company policy. Normally if someone lights up the driver stops and asks them to put it out. If they don't the driver announces the bus is out of service. The person usually puts it out so they can get where they are going. Once in a while they go ape E36 M3, start threatening small children and drive off with the bus.
