Wow... thanks for the memories...
One thing that I did learn from this is that members of the honor guard absolutely cannot accept a tip.

When my WW2 Marine grandfather passed, there was a few young marines that came in to play taps and do their official part. I was impressed and proud? I mean you get taps played for YOU 1 time right? Except they have a fake bugle and they hold it up like playing, but a speaker in the bell plays a really crap sounding version of it. I wasnt mad at the young Marines sweating their asses off, but i was let down by the fake taps. Grandpa earned purple hearts, fought in war, almost died, saw his buddies die, lives to 97 then gets a recording of taps.
either way i wanted to go thank the young Marines, but they were in their formal uniform and had to run back to their van for AC.
but tipping was never a thought. Especially not for the vulture funeral home.

I told him that's the last thing I'd need!

I just laughed out loud heartily.
In reply to TJL (Forum Supporter) :
A good friends father was buried and got the recorded taps via the bugle. It sounded lousy. I'm not a veteran, but would rather not have it played if that is the way it will be done.

This resurrected post has sent me down a wormhole of thoughts:
1. I have never tipped a tow truck driver to my shame. Usually I am already looking ahead to the repair or parts bill if I can do it myself. I will make it happen next time.
2. I would be almost be afraid to tip someone at the funeral home, it seems distasteful, given the situation somehow, but what do I know?
Never really pondered this. But the remark about tipping the diggers makes sense
I have used one of local cemeteries too many times than I would like to think of to send my pets off to the great beyond in their crematory and you are meeting the "diggers" so to speak, they also deserved something, again will do better.
Lots to ponder, Lobster
