I was thinking of what cars have really got me continually skimming the advertisements, cars that I could actually aspire to one day own. My big list is huge, and not that I wouldn't jump at the chance to own something off of that one, I whittled it down to a shorter list in my head. This is the steel (and fiberglass, and reinforced-composite... yeah...) that tricks me into thinking that it's always only a liiiiiittle bit more to save up for.
Mazda RX7 FD, Dodge Viper GTS, Lotus Esprit V8 (as long as it's got the Trueno taillights and not the four circles), 3rd generation Camaro. One I could buy right now if I wasn't working on two projects already. One I could realistically buy in the near future with a little bit of saving. Two that would need to depreciate some more for a few years and meet me when I've got more cash and a garage to store them. I'll let you figure out which is which.
Datsun 240/260/280Z, Porsche 924S and E30 M3 get an honorable mention, but I could go on and on until it turns into my big list. I'm rambling... I need to go to bed.
AC 911. When I finally get a garage, there is a little driven 912E waiting for me in Cali. Close enough in my books.
A "perfect" (that is, no rust...EVER) 2 liter 914, a nice, close to stock (yet with A/C) 240/260/280Z, a 2nd gen. Camaro or Firebird....I'm not too picky, it just has to be very low mileage and in near showroom condition, and for "utility" a 79 to 86 El Camino.
FD RX-7 in stock form, C-5/C-6 well messaged, and a Bentley Turbo R. One quick and handles well, one stupid fast, and a cruiser.
Oh yeah, one of these too.
47 Dodge pickup. 69 Charger (thanks, Duke boys) 10AE Miata. 93 FD RX-7 (LSx Swap, natch) 04 Subaru Impreza STi. ) 04 Subaru Forrester with STi guts. Rust free and flawless 95 Caprice 9C1. 70 Olds Vista Cruiser.
I saw a car a year or so ago on a website, and couldn't quite remember it.Found it again yesterday.
1988 Bentley Turbo R....with a 675hp Paxton'd 502 BB...with nitrous. Everything upgraded (trans w/overdrive,brakes,Ford nine-inch rear,suspension, 1000 watt stereo,etc) Looked stock.
That's it for the short list so far today.
Cars for specific purposes:
-
Clean 1st gen. CRX HF or EG Civic VX for daily hyper-miling appliance duty.
-
A truck. Any truck.
-
Newer Elise or older NSX for "budget supercar" status.
-
Twin turbo slant six mopar. Uglier and brickier the better, for a fun cruiser with a bench seat to take to the drive in.
-
My old EP auto-x car. She will be mine. Again.
-
Something cheap and dirty with a cage for track rat/LeMons use.
Delta Integrale HF Evo (I WILL own one of those eventually)
Fox mustang with a HOT 2.3T, and full Griggs suspension.
Mk4 Supra with LS power
C4 Corvette with 2JZGTE power
First gen Celica
some oddball car that can break track records for production based cars at tracks all over the world!

You'd have to own both of these at the same time, for full effect.
Shortlist for me includes an AC 911 sometime in the not-too-distant future.
And lately I keep seeing cheap, ratty 105-chassis Alfa's for sale. I'd like to turn a GTV or Berlina into a track rat. Just cage it, don't worry about the rust, sort the suspension and steering, & leave the engine alone.

I will someday own a bugeye sprite, a lotus elise/exige, and a car I built myself. Maybe not all at once. That is my short list.

The next few on my list go something like this, not really in any order: MR2 (AW or SW), Esprit Turbo, some kind of '70s kit car that I can build a chassis and drivetrain under, some other old Lotii like an Excel or a Europa, and a V8 to put in my Starion.
If I win the lotto you could add things like slantnose 911s and crazy French sports cars onto that list, but who knows when that's going to happen...

FD RX-7 in stock form
Good luck finding one of those I've heard they exist, but all I seem to turn up are the "standard" Walgreens-bodykit examples with a whole RadioShack installed in the interior. I've yet to see many of the mythical "stock" FD RX7.
Mine will be the most unique FD RX7 in the world... by looking stock and having a 13B-REW rotary under the hood.
In reply to JeepinMatt:
They are few and far between. I have seen maybe two for sale. The more stock they are the higher the price is. The last one I saw was asking 19K. It was mint low mileage 94, and sold in a little over a week.
