Porsche Platica: Striking examples in a marble quarry

Photography by J.A. Ackley

Porsche has sculpted some of the finest sports cars in history. What better place to exhibit these works of art than in the middle of a former quarry for marble, a material used for some of the greatest sculptures ever made?

That’s the premise behind Porsche Platica, a first-time event put on by Harper Porsche of Knoxville, Tennessee, at the appropriately named The Quarry Venue.

So, why call it Platica? It’s Spanish for chat, and the highly curated and well-presented collection certainly got people talking. Why Spanish when we're looking at German cars? The event fell on Cinco de Mayo, so why not celebrate that, too, complete with Targaritas and a taco truck.

Harper Porsche presented its latest restoration project, a 1975 Porsche Carrera 2.7, which has sat since 1993. The dealer intends to enter this in Porsche's annual Porsche Restoration Challenge.

Porsche Platica presented cars in colors that ranged the entire gamut of the rainbow. For example, David Taylor brought a 1973 Porsche 914 in Delphi Green.

Love Blue? Here's a backdated restomod 1982 Porsche 911 of Stephen Malone and a German-market 1993 Porsche 968 Clubsport of Harper Porsche.

This Porsche 992 GT3 RS of Jon Clay pays tribute to the Carrera RS.

Speaking of Porsche heritage, let's not forget rally racing, with this 1981 Porsche SC of Michael Ruppert, clad in Keen Safari.

Motorsports and Porsche go together like bratwurst and sauerkraut. At the pinnacle of today's sport car racing is this 2024 Porsche 963 that competes in IMSA and WEC.

And Porsche certainly has quite the resume in racing. This 2019 Porsche GT2 Club Sport from the Brumos Collection won its class in 2022 and 2023 at Pikes Peak.

Of course, Porsches work well on the street, too. This is one of 823 Speedsters built in 1989. Harper Porsche is only the second owner of this example in Grand Prix White.

The color of Signal Orange draws attention to this 1970 Porsche 911 of John Acker.

And a 1959 Porsche 356A draws attention period, with this one in Ruby Red, presented by Jim Johnston.

This 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder of Speedwerks Exotic Car Experience screams performance.

Rise Fab Shop presented one of their latest projects, which involves a Porsche powered by … a Honda engine?!

The Chattanooga Motorcar Festival and Flatrock Motorclub brought their Porsches to the event.
