Why picking the right size steering wheel matters

Photography by Tim Suddard

While we had an original, black, plastic, two-spoke Sprite steering wheel, we hated it. It was too big around–close to 15 inches–and too ugly. Plus it just wasn’t comfortable.

As your steering wheel is the part you see and touch the most in a car, it is not a place to scrimp.

So we ordered a traditional Moto-Lita wheel from Moss Motors: black leather with bright aluminum spokes.

While not the least expensive option out there–figure $307.99 and $104.99 for the hub kit–the wheel looks and feels terrific. The smaller, 13-inch-diameter wheel also makes getting in and out of the Sprite much easier.

Due to its light weight, the car is not at all difficult to move around in a parking lot, which is often the downside of moving to a smaller steering wheel.

We did need to shim the steering column with a couple of washers to place the wheel in the middle of the steering wheel surround.
