How to make historically accurate mounts on our frame

Photos by Tim Suddard

While we will need to add a few brackets for the battery mount and fire system, we had one last major frame project to finish during this stage of our Elva Mk VI sports racer’s restoration: We needed to make a mount to hold the cooling system’s header tank.

Both this tank and its mounts were missing from our car. We will make the tank itself in a subsequent update, but first we had to build two mounts–one at the front of the tank and another at the rear.

Old photos showed us what both the tank and its mounts should look like. We simply made a cardboard template, cut the pieces from sheet metal, and welded them together. Then we could weld the mounts to the chassis tubes in the correct location.
