What’s more desirable than a Porsche 906? How about one with a unique body–and an equally unique backstory?
After a handful of top 5 finishes in the 1969 SCCA Championship, this Porsche, 906-136, received a lighter and more powerful engine featuring a magnesium crankcase, updated valve train and cylinders heads as well as a Bosch slide-valve injection system.
The upgrades didn’t end there, however, as the Porsche’s mechanic, Alwin Springer, had the “bold but brilliant idea” to replace the original body with something lighter while car’s owner, Vasek Polak, was away in Germany.
Inspired by the 908/03 Springer transformed the Porsche from a coupe to Spyder, in the process eliminating “any item not deemed to be essential.”
Under new ownership, the 906 would rack up a handful of SCCA podium finishes and, later, get another new body.
A later owner wanted to return the Porsche to a coupe, though the project was put into storage and eventually sold.
Since then, the car was brought back to its original Spyder configuration, reconstructed with original Vasek Polak Spyder panels in addition to specially fabricated pieces. Likewise, the chassis and engine were also rebuilt.
The work was completed in time for the Porsche to attend the 2023 Porsche Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca–original Vasek Polak livery and all.
