The only one of its kind: Porsche 959 “Speedster”

This doesn’t look like your typical Porsche 959. That’s because Porsche racer and craftsman Karl Heinz Feustel decided to turn it into a Speedster, the only one of its kind.

Jürgen Lässig, who would go onto win the 1995 24 Hours of Daytona, bought the 959 new. Lässig wrecked it on the autobahn before the Porsche even covered a few thousand kilometers. Feustel then acquired it.

After modifying the car, Feustel displayed it on the Auto Becker stand at the Frankfurt and Essen shows. His asking price back in 1989? Approximately $1,200,000, around $3 million in today’s money.

Find this 1987 Porsche 959 “Speedster” for auction at RM Sotheby’s, with an estimated value of €1,100,000-€1,500,000 (approximately $1,250,000-$1,700,000).

Wow. I was this many years old when I learned one of these actually exists. A convertible 959 was the unicorn I had in mind as my dream car in the late 80's/early 90s.  I remember seeing a few fakes--911 cabrios with replica 959 body kits--but I eventually came to believe that the real thing didn't actually exist.  I happily stand corrected.

Similar to you, I was surprised to learn that this is the only 959 cabriolet.
