OK, a couple of questions here for the BMW gurus:

i know that early E24's were based on the E12, and later ones on the E28, but in which model year did the E24 chassis get updated? was it for '82, same year the E28 came out?

is the E28 rear suspension carried by a bolt-in subframe? if so, is the subframe identical to the updated E24? and if so, is it a bolt-in to the E12?

nothing to see here. move along.

I believe the model year was 1982 for euro cars and 1983 for US cars. The late e24 and the e28 used the same bolt in subframes, both front and rear. I don't know if they're a bolt in to an e12 but I believe they can be adapted without too much issue.
