Everyone seems to want to buy a 4 door, 4wd truck...and the prices show it.
There seems to still be bargains to be had (or at least reasonable prices) on single cab trucks that are just rwd. Shopping one of these might be cheap enough that you can keep the Montero too.

That Youngstown truck is an 8.1 with the Allison, no part of that powertrain would ever know it was towing my RX-7.
I might search craigslist in Texas and Florida for cleaner trucks if the cost is not substantially higher for solid rocker panels and non rusted bolts.

Realize that single cab 2 wheel drive newer 1/2 T truck can outpull older 3/4 Ton pick up with a more comfortable ride, better fuel mileage, cheaper and more durable parts.

Even just NC and TN will get you a cleaner truck.
If truck shopping a couple hundred miles from home, I would just drive down a fwd car to shop and if you find a truck, rent a uhaul tow dolly and tow back your fwd car with your new truck.
Or, drive down the Montero pulling an empty trailer. Once you buy the truck, use trailer to tow home the Montero
