The Mercedes Benz SL-Class debuted as a racing sports car in 1952, with the 300 SL. Back then, it generated 175 horsepower. Now the automaker has the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance. It puts out 805 horses, with 1047 lb.-ft. of torque. How’s that for evolution?
[Which Mercedes-Benz SL roadster is the right one for you?]
The hybrid powertrain of the E Performance features a 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo engine with an AMG Electric Drive Unit. With that amount of power, it can do a zero-to-60 in 2.8 seconds.
Unlike back in 1952, today’s SL features a wealth of electronic wizardry. With different modes adjusting the AMG Active Ride Control suspension–with active roll stabilization–and active rear-axle steering, you can change the ride characteristics of the E Performance for a range of situations, from track to road.
Mercedes-Benz says dealerships will begin to receive delivery of the SL 63 S E Performance in 2024.
Will it become a desirable classic, such as the Gullwing or Pagoda have become? Time will tell.
