Adding a five-speed to a Sprite? Additional mods to make.

Photography by Tim Suddard

Our next project on our Sprite’s interior was to deal with the shift boot. Putting a five-speed in place of the original four-speed caused a problem: The hole in the metal hump that surrounds the shifter simply didn’t allow enough room to move the lever into fifth.

Not wanting to follow the directions on the Rivergate Restoration five-speed installation kit and eliminate the metal hump and move towards a more conventional shift boot, we decided to enlarge the hole and devise a new solution for a shift boot.

We ordered an MGB shift boot from Moss Motors and just used the rubber inner boot. The result looks more like an early Cobra which, in our opinion, is certainly not a bad thing.

I have been using a generic Dorman CV joint boot from Advance Auto for years!

I went the other direction and cut a section out of the metal piece to lower the top. The hole and boot are the stock, I was able to move the the boot closer to the pivot point of the shifter. I took about an inch out of it IIRC.
