Finding the ideal spot for our Sprite’s oil cooler

Photography by Tim Suddard

Since we were running a supercharger and would be getting well north of 100 horsepower from our little, old 1275cc Sprite engine, we thought an oil cooler would be a wise investment.

Moss Motors sells a cooler and an installation kit for a Sprite for less than $200.

The kit comes with the correctly sized lines and adapters to run the lines out of the block and back into the filter adapter.

What we hadn’t counted on is that there was no way a flip-up front end, like the one on our car, would clear the oil cooler.

We moved the cooler all over the engine compartment and finally found a location next to the right side of the radiator, directly in front of the intake for the heater motor. (We’re not running heat, so this space was free to use.)

The oil lines still fit without modification, and we routed them through cavities around the radiator. We made some simple brackets to securely mount the cooler to the radiator support.

I've seen them mounted flat (i.e. aimed at the ground) with a small scoop under the car that sends air up through the cooler - it then exits either through or around the radiator depending   The only caution on that method is that if you ever make an off track excursion, the scoop may direct rocks at the cooler......might want to include  layer of 1/4" spaced hole hardware cloth/screen as a rock catcher.
