Using context clues to recreate our Elva’s original oil cooler setup

Photography by Chris Tropea

When inspecting the frame of our 1962 Elva Mk VI, we found the remains of what looked like an oil cooler mount. Old photos further confirmed that one was previously installed.

Like almost everything else on our Elva, we needed to replace it.

The original oil cooler measured about 12x3 inches and had an aluminum duct in the floor area. For the best airflow, we also needed to recreate the previous setup.

First, we sourced a very similar oil cooler–13.3x3.03 inches, including the mounting bracket–from British America Transfer (BAT).

From there, we fabbed our own brackets that we then welded in place, letting us mount the cooler in its original location.

With our cooler in place, we can now design the lines (also available from BATand connect the oil cooler to the engine.
