We needed to fix our Ferrari’s exhaust system.
The first problem was that the passenger-side spring mounting system was missing. We chased parts and found that this simple little bit of hardware cost hundreds of dollars and would take weeks to get.
Screw that, we disassembled the other side and took the parts to our local Ace Hardware. For about four bucks, we found something similar and quickly reassembled the exhaust system.
Further adding to the frustrations, we found a receipt from Advanced Muffler & Brake of West Palm Beach. They had cobbled together this exhaust system in 2020 and charged our buddy nearly $900.
The biggest problem, other than just leaving out one of the spring clips, was aiming the tips directly at the rubber bumper. Naturally, the rubber bumper started to melt. We needed to get this fixed before any more damage occurred.
To fix the damage, we grabbed a 4-foot-long, ¾-inch solid rod that we had lying around in the shop and stuck it into each exhaust tip. Then, carefully, we bent down each tip.
While this is not an officially sanctioned repair method, with years of experience at the race track and in the shop, we were able to satisfactorily complete this repair–and for free. The key is to brace the exhaust system further back, move slowly and carefully, and balance both sides perfectly.
While the bumper is still melted a little bit and will need to be repaired, we are also looking at lighter European or fiberglass options. So, for now, we’ll live with the damage. It is only underneath the bumper, so unless you look very closely, you won’t notice.
