Taking a Project Car for That First Drive | Project VW Rabbit GTI

Bit by bit, we’ve been getting our Callaway turbocharged VW Rabbit GTI back on the road. After we fetched the car from its slumber, we fixed a few mechanical problems and took care of some cosmetic issues. Then we had Tim McNair, detail artist to the stars, bring it all together. Essentially, we’re now going to call our GTI complete.

The car is a joy to drive. It’s comfortable and feels more modern than something released in the middle of the ’70s. The GTI can easily keep up with interstate traffic and feels very stable at speeds.

On back roads, the car carves nicely, with the extra power offered by the turbo setup a real plus. So far, we have put about a hundred miles on it.

We plan to put another hundred or so miles on it. Then we’ll get it back in the shop for a full inspection. Then we can run it across the dyno rollers to fully assess the engine’s condition.

But the attention it gets is truly amazing. Watch for more updates.

Nice car.

Do both the bumpers slightly angle upwards?  Or is it just me.

The bumpers tend to look that way, that said, the rake/angle of the steering wheel is completely off. I am not sure if it is the lense they are using or what?
