The simplicity of keeping it simple

A friend just asked me if I’m looking forward to The Amelia this weekend.

I am, but I admit that, right now, my brain is tracking a lot of moving parts: lodging, packing, car prep, pre- and post-event editorial, a stacked itinerary. We have an issue to get out the door. Then add in our inaugural Amelia Island Kickoff party.

And the 911 is ready for a weekend away, right? It was just serviced, but taking a 40-year-old car on the road can add a few complications to the plan.

Plus, I still have to finish cleaning it up for Saturday’s Radwood show. It’s close but there are few things left to do.

I also need to get a haircut.

Is my wife coming up–and if so, for one day or multiple? She hasn’t yet let me know. Once she decides, we can ping the dogsitter.

I really should make a checklist.

This past Monday evening, I hung out with Orlando Roadsters for one of their monthly meets. These have been going on since 2002–always the last Monday of the month–and I’ve been attending for many years.

Prep for this was simple.

  • Step 1: Get the Miata out of the garage.
  • Step 2: Check oil and tire pressures.
  • Step 3: Ensure that I have enough gas to get to Orlando.
  • Step 4: Program the destination into my phone.
  • Step 5: Depress the clutch, engage first gear, and leave my driveway.

Once there–just a parking lot in Altamonte Springs–we hung out. As the sun set, the evening seemed to come alive: people chatting, cars coming and going, dogs wagging their little tails. Lots of laughing, lots of smiling. No trophies, no PA announcements.

It was simple, it was fun, and there’s a reason why I go back every month for more.
