Car Catcher: A Factory-Backed 500 Mondial That Ran at the 1954 Mille Miglia

This 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial is especially rare as it was not only one of Ferrari’s factory entries at the 1954 Mille Miglia—one of some 24 cars entered by the Italian car maker that year—it is also a Series I bodied by Pininfarina.

Although Ferrari may be best known for its V12 engines, the Mondial made do with a two-liter, four-cylinder engine. Despite its size, the engine was still good for around 170 horsepower.

This Mondial, like so many of Ferrari’s race cars, was sold off after its racing duties. It was first purchased by a Swedish importer, who then sold to a Valdemar Stener of Lhusdal, Farila, Sweden.

The Ferrari would go on to change hands multiple times, but was still raced by a few of its previous owners.

Most recently, in 2019, the 500 was fitted with a 3.0-liter unit built by Hall & Hall, though the original numbers-matching powerplant is included.
