Upgrading our Sprite’s interior with proper carpeting

Photography by Tim Suddard

We wanted our Sprite to feel a bit richer than stock. Could we do better than the original rubber mats?

Yes, of course.

Moss Motors sells a cut pile carpet kit in any of the original interior colors (black, red, tan, navy blue) for an early Sprite. Pricing starts at $279.99 (and on sale now).

While we have been constantly thrilled regarding the availability, quality and pricing of Sprite parts from Moss Motors, that doesn’t extend to this carpet kit.

First, the fit and quality are abysmal. The front floor mats are not long enough. The tunnel cover had a tear that we had to sew up. Many of the pieces needed trimming, and several were not bound at all.

Other than a mat that went over the center of the area between and behind the rear seats, the carpeting stopped. Moss Motors must have assumed you would just buy the vinyl mat that they sell for the rear fender wells and trunk area.

Instead, we took the more laborious route of ordering raw carpeting and carefully shaped and cut carpeting over the rear fender wells and into the trunk area.

With everything installed, we installed their snap kit to hold mats in place in the front footwells and behind the seats.

After a lot of swearing and work, were able to get a very good result. A better kit, even at twice the price, would have made this much easier.
